Control the training load for maximum improvements. If you want to get the most benefits for the amount of hours, kilometres and effort that you put into your club training, control the training loads so that everyone in the group receives benefits from the session. Each of us are unique human beings and physical capacity differs greatly between individuals. The best quote I heard in regard to training about the these differences in ability was from a runner, when he said to me “one athletes warm up is another athletes speed session” that gives you a great picture in your mind of some runners cruising along and the others struggling in their wake. So if we begin from that point it seems to be saying, choose your training partners very well. How many riders train in groups that are too fast for them, try to do the same amount of work as the strong riders in the group and then wonder when they are wrecked and not improving? This approach can very quickly lead to overtraining and loss of enthusiasm for riders who may not be fit or strong as other riders in his/her training group. The good news is that this effect of the physical differences is not so pronounced with cycling compared to runners as some of the differences in cyclist’s ability / power output can be overcome by the drafting effect. Riders of different abilities can train effectively in the same group and get a good workout. Obviously there are limits to the size of the difference and training effectiveness. So for example while doing the long steady miles (they are steady aren’t they?) a rider who is not so fit or strong in comparison to other riders in the training group can improve their fitness by mainly sitting in the training group and gradually doing a bit more at the front over the weeks as their fitness improves. The goal for these sessions should be for everyone to have a workout according to their ability and fitness and come home in reasonable shape. The strong riders who want to do a lot of work can stay on the front longer when doing their turns. For this to work well there must be trust and agreement. It can be achieved very well by having an agreement that the group is there for everyone’s benefit. And trust between the riders in the group that riders will spend more or less time on the front according to their fitness and training goals. Also agreement that as rider’s fitness improves they will gradually do some more turns or longer turns at the front and that the goal for the session is training and not a race. This might not be the norm everywhere. In some groups it might be a case that one or two individuals call the shots and the training is geared towards their needs and gaol’s only.
For example juniors or riders new to cycling can gain so much practical knowledge from training in groups with seniors and vets, but they may not always be strong enough to take their turns when due at the front of the group. However they might be allowed to just go up and down the line according to their fitness and not for every turn. Obviously as their fitness improves they can do some more turns at the front. This works very well for the long easy / steady sessions when the differences are not too big between riders For more intensive or hilly sessions sessions where riders are under more pressure the group needs to be made up of riders of around the same ability. To give some examples of the drafting effect, studies with world class Team Pursuit teams (male) show that the leading riders power output is around 600-650 watts compared to the rider is in the third or fourth position when the power output is reduced to 350-400 watts (A Jeukendrup Performance cycling) I also enclose some examples of some riders tests below with recommendations for power and Heart rate ranges for their long aerobic cycling sessions. You can clearly see how they could train well together in the same group.
So have the meeting organise the group and have agreed goals, you’ll see the benefits in the races when the sun is shining! Enjoy your cycling. 2010 AGM Chairperson: Emma Walsh Secretary: Enda Donnelly Treasurer: Ger Wyley PRO: Sean Dwyer Committee Frank Browne Tony O' Mahony Benny Flynn Damian Travers Justin coonan Maurice Fennell John Coffeey Ray Dwyer Chairperson Address Welcome and thanks to everyone for attending tonight’s AGM.
The club has grown and achieved so much in the last 12 months: from the development of the ‘Beginners Group’ – regarding which I would like to give a special mention of thanks to Padriag deBurca for his dedication; from club competitions in which we saw record numbers taking part; to our successes on the road in open races and Time Trials; and also our positive participation in various leisure events run throughout the country.
On the competitive front, one of our youngest members, Brian Hallissey, had a fantastic year which eventually saw him getting a call-up to the National Irish Development Squad.
Results in open races became a regular occurrence over the season, featuring early wins from Ray Dwyer, Keith Walsh and Brian Hallissey, and a fantastic 2nd place finish by Damian in stage 3 in the Cork Man 3-Day which saw the club become a force to be reckoned with. As the season developed numerous other wins and top-10 results were commonplace among the DCC racing team.
In the Time Trial events Maurice Hickey continued to improve, winning the club TT and taking gold in the A3 Munster Championships.
On the leisure side, I must single out Maurice Fennell who took part in the An Post Cycle Challenge and completed all 5 events throughout the country.
One of the biggest leisure events is now hosted in Dungarvan, The Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford. This is a fantastic event and it was amazing to see so many cyclists cycle through Dungarvan. From the club’s point of view we participated en masse and received various compliments and messages of goodwill from visiting cyclists. I’d like to congratulate the Waterford Sports Partnership on running such a huge and brilliantly successful event.
Our club competitions went from strength to strength with record numbers attending. Thanks to our sponsors – Liam Rossitter, Ger Wyley, Finbarr Kelly and Tony O’Mahony – without whom we would not be able to run these events. I would like to express our special appreciation to Frank Browne and Richie Power, who for 10 weeks ran and marshalled the Summer Series making it a safe and very enjoyable event for all taking part.
Our annual Open Race was held later in the season but proved very successful with the support of our new sponsors, SPECSAVERS. Thanks also to Minnies for their sponsorship over the last year.
As chairperson I’d like to acknowledge the great work during the year carried out by Enda, club secretary; Ger, club treasurer, and Sean, club PRO. Thanks also to all the members of this year’s committee.
Overall it has been a very successful season. Looking forward Dungarvan Cycling Club is in a very strong position and with the help and interest from all club members we can continue to grow and develop.
CONGRATULATIONS BRIAN Brian finished 7th in the National Junior Cycling Championships in Sligo over the weekend. This was Brians first championship. Brian cycled very strong all day, he was away in a break for most of the race with one other and was unlucky to be caught on the last lap. Well done Brian!!! INTERNATIONAL CALL UP Brian now goes on to represent Ireland in the upcoming Junior Tour of Ireland. Brian will be part of the Irish Development Squad, the club wishes him all the best!! ONE-TWO for DCC The club had 6 entrants in the A4 race. Lining up alongside Keith and Ray were Anthony Dwyer, Sean Dwyer, John Flynn and Eamon Phelan. The race was 5 laps of an 11k circuit with a long downhill stretch followed by a long drag into a strong headwind. Ray and Keith were very active trying to get away in the early laps and Sean managed a brief trip up the road at one point but nothing was sticking. However at the start of lap 4 Keith and Ray got into a break with 2 other riders. They worked well together for the remainder of the race holding off the chasing pack being driven on by Fermoy and Blarney. With a kilometre to go the break were not going to get caught and it was Keith who made the first move about 400 metres out. The other 2 riders couldn't match him and he rode on to take the victory with Ray coming round the others to take second and ensure a fantastic result for Dungarvan CC. The other lads finished well up in the bunch with Anthony setting the cat amongst the pigeons by starting the sprint for the minor places about a kilometre out. Well done to Eamon on his race debut and John on his return to racing. Brian Hallissey, Maurice Hickey and Enda Donnelly lined up for the A2/A3 combined race. This was to be 7 laps giving 77kms. Enda was away for a lap and a bit early in the race, but with only two riders in this move it was doomed on what was a windy day. Brian and Maurice were also in moves, but they too were brought back. The break of the day (including local man Rory Wyley) went on lap 3 and nothing got away after that. The race was won by West Clare's Jarlath Hassett with Rory second. Another local rider, Cian Dwyer, had a good result getting third in the u-16 race. Tour de Cure 2010 - by Colin Organ Dungarvan members that took part were Davey Tobin, Colin Organ, Keith Walsh, Frank Browne, Richie Power, Eamonn Doherty, Kevin O’Sullivan, Niall Herlihy, John Coffey, Tony Hickey, Vinny Feeney, and Padraig De Burca. Apologies if I missed anyone. So for people who think that is a good idea, there was only one place to be today, and that was Midleton to cycle with the legend Stephen Roche and raise a few bob for some well deserving charities.
This is only the second year of this event and it has grown from 600 last year to over 1,000 today. The spin rolled out at 09.00ish, being delayed a bit by the increase in riders this year. The group headed down the main road towards Youghal. After Youghal we turned at Piltown cross and headed for Clashmore. It has to be said there was a very hot pace being set along here and some of the top teams around driving it on The Edge, Dan Morrissey, Fermoy, Blarney, Kanturk, Midleton and a few from DCC.
The 100k split along here and headed for Aglish while the 160k headed for Milstreet and Ballymac. The first food stop was at Ballymac, although not everyone was hungry and decided to keep going!! All the cyclists favourites were on offer sambos, nutri grain, bananas and of course fruit cake. Which is the only reason why anyone takes on these challenges! No tea or coffee though, sort this out for next year please Stephen.
Fully re-fuelled we set out again heading for Ardfinnan and Clogheen. A few gels may have been consumed on this stretch of road because up next was The Vee. We were very lucky here as we caught a tail wind most of the way up and as it was a nice day, The Vee was looking spectacular.
From here we dropped down to Lismore over a very rough road, where a few people were seen fixing punctures.
Another stop in Lismore. No tea or coffee here either, but plenty of everything else.
On we went on the last leg of our journey to Tallow and from here through Dungourney and back to Midleton.
All in all, it was a very enjoyable day. Groups were working together well, the weather was good, everyone got back in one piece and the event was much better organised than last year. The road signs were good and MOST potholes were circled with paint.
Back at Midleton there was plenty of food and we eventually got a cup of tea / coffee. There were also rub downs on offer, although seemed to make some people worse!! Stephen Roche was there walking around meeting and talking to everyone. One lucky participant won the bike that Stephen was cycling, it was an “Unovelo” worth €3500 and looked very nice. Lucky him. CORKMAN 3 DAY - 4 Stage race Maurice had jumped across to the chasing group and was looking good to improve on his 11th overall.
The break worked well together up the hills and down to the finish, with Ciaran Keane (Murphy Surveyors) going for the yellow said he wouldn't sprint so it was between Damian and Blarney rider Ed Barry to go for the line with Ed winning the sprint for the line. The break crossed the line with 53 seconds over the bunch, moving Damian up to 7th overall. All other riders finished safely in the bunch in what was a good days riding for all concerned in the DCC colours. STAGE 4 So a good weekends racing was had, we had Damian in 9th overall with a second place finish on Stage 3, Maurice had a very good TT to get himself to 11th on GC after Stage 2, Brian nearly stayed away on stage 1 and is getting stronger as every race goes on, Enda was unlucky in the fact that none of his breakaway attempts stuck but rode strongly throughout and the old man of the group Ray was very consistent throughout the weekend whilst nursing his knee around the course. A special word of thanks has to go to Diirecteur Sportif/Team Car Driver/ Food organiser/Photographer/Mechanic and gear organiser Emma Walsh who made the weekend a lot easier on the riders. Emma spent a lot of the weekend driving the team car following the stages by herself , so if anybody wants to experience the joys of short stage racing I'm sure the company would be most welcome. So from all the riders from the Corkman - Cheers Em. NEW WEBSITE a new website called "Race Starts At" ( http://racestarts.at) has been created to help cyclists and race organisers. I'd greatly appreciate it if you could please inform your members of this new website and also put a link on your own website to RaceStarts.At. Background From a cyclist's perspective it can be very hard to get detailed information on events. Often the available event details only contain the name of a race, the province in which it is on and a mobile phone number. So it can be hard to find out what the course is like, how long the race is, what categories are catered for, parking & changing facilities available etc. From a race organiser's perspective it can be frustrating getting lots of phone calls asking the same questions. The event details are given to Cycling Ireland very early in the year, well before the details are known. Exact course details are often only decided upon a few days before the race so it's also difficult to get this information communicated back to the cyclists. Overview RaceStarts. At is a website designed to help solve the problems mentioned above. The site contains a page for every Cycling Ireland race and leisure cycle. Each page allows people to add more information to the page by using comments. Cyclists can ask organisers questions by creating comments, organisers can answer queries or provide new event details by creating a comment. It's easy to use and doesn't even require registration. Benefits RaceStarts. At allows cyclists to easily discover information about events they are interested in. They can ask questions, answer questions and after the event they can post the results, link to reports, photos or videos. Event organisers can easily add event details themselves and hence reduce the number of phone calls from cyclists before the event. Additionally, new races or leisure cycles which aren't contained in the Cycling Ireland calendar can easily be added to RaceStarts. At RaceStarts. At is a bit of an experiment, it may work, it may not. But if you are frustrated by the lack of information or tired of being inundated with phone calls please try and use the site so the we can help solve the problem. The A4 race was over 3 laps of a 20km circuit. Ray was attacking from the gun and on the first lap got away with 2 others. By the start of the last lap it was down to Ray and Comeragh's Michael McGrath. Both worked very hard together to stay away, made all the more difficult by the wind and downpours of hail. With neither the Dungarvan or Comeragh contingent contributing to the chase effort in the bunch it was set for a sprint finish between the 2 with Ray proving the stronger over the last 200 metres to take the win. We also had Keith Walsh, Anthony Dwyer, Sean Dwyer and debutant Colin Organ lining out. Keith was involved in a couple of early moves but unfortunately punctured at the end of the first lap. Anthony, Sean and Colin finished comfortably in the bunch. It was a double celebration for the Dwyers with Ray's nephew Cian winning the Under 16 race for Dan Morrissey Carrick Wheelers. Brian Hallissey was our representative in the A3 race, 4 laps of the same circuit. In a fairly uneventful race Brian tried to get in a few breaks but nothing was sticking and the race went down to a bunch finish won by Barrow Wheelers' Hugh Byrne. Damian Travers went off in the A1/A2 race over 5 laps. The circuit was a draggy lap with no real climbs so his hopes were high. As usual the race got going right from the gun (once the lead car gave them a chance). Attacks were coming thick and fast and Damian was active in both the trying to get away and chasing down, but as the fishing adage says "the one that got away" was the one he had no part in. The break went towards the end of lap 1 and stayed away to the finish. Damian rode strong throughout with the Dan Morrissey and Edge teams rolling through on the front to ensure that at least a good days training was had. Keith Gater Comeragh CC won the overall and Damian tried to finish with a flourish but after riding hard all day the tank was empty. Roll on the Corkman 3 day next weekend where there shall be a full Dungarvan CC team. Grueling Gorey 3 Day. – Damian flies the flag for DCC!! Background and Objectives
1.1 Following the 2009 AGM a working party was established to review the competition one one-day licence process so as to:
· reduce the administration burden currently placed on both commissaires and the office; · ensure that there is accurate recording of one-day licence money; · ensure that there is accurate recording of points awarded to one-day licence holders (resulting in them being upgraded if applicable); · that no undue obstacles are placed in the way of a person wishing to try a race, training camp, leisure spin on a "one-off" basis; · Have a revised system in place for 2010 season. 1.2 It should be noted that: · A rider taking out a one-day licence is only eligible for the overall prize-fund, i.e., is excluded from category prizes; · A non-affiliated rider cannot ride National Championships on a one-day licence; · There is no regulation requiring Commissaires to issue one-day licences.
2. Agreed Proposal
2.1 Responsibility for the sign-on desk (including confirmation that riders possess the correct licence for the event they are entering) and issuing of one-day licences is placed with the Race Organisers. Competitors with an annual licence card sign-on using the current Sign-on Sheet.
3. Process for Competition One-day Licences
3.1 Cycling Ireland Office maintain a stock of sequentially numbered A3 One-day Licence Sheets (in duplicate). 3.2 Race Organisers request from the Cycling Ireland Office at least two weeks in advance of their event the requisite number of One-day Licence Sheets (there are 25 lines per sheet). 3.3 The Commissaire provides the Race Organiser with back numbers (as issued to them by Regional Commissaires) for use by one-day licence holders. 3.4 The Race Organiser returns, to the Cycling Ireland Office, the original copy of the One-day Licence Sheet along with the appropriate fee - within one week. Failure to return One-day Licence Sheets will result in the full club affiliation fee been charged the following year regardless of when the club affiliates. The One-day Licence Sheet is to be returned even if no one-day licences are issued. 3.5 The duplicate One-day Licence Sheet is returned by the Commissaire along with the Commissaire’s report and Sign-on Sheet. 3.6 The Cycling Ireland Office logs and tracks the issue and return of One-day Licence Sheets and records points obtained by riders competing under one-day licences to facilitate grading of the rider if they subsequently take out an annual licence.
Family and 3rd level student discounts are available. Contact Enda for details.
Completed forms accompanied with the fee can be returned by post to The Burgery, Abbeyside, Dungarvan. Alternatively you could drop a sealed envelope marked “Dungarvan Cycling Club membership” into Ger at Wyley Sports & Footwear, Dungarvan.
The first batch of applications off on Friday 15th January 2010, it would be a great help if you could return your application form before then. This also means you’re insured from early in the year. HAMPER APPEAL - All wrapped up! CHARITY CYCLE 2009 in aid of Solas Centre
Emma Walsh, Bernie Thompson (Solas Centre), Kathleen Foley (Solas Centre) and Tom Thompson (Solas Centre) AGM Our AGM took place on Friday night (2nd October).
