We're back to regular racing format again tonight (Wednesday) with a finish up Colligan. Sign on from the layby on the Clonmel road from 6:30. Please note that the ENTRY FEE IS 5 EURO this year to cover increased safety costs. Also, you must hold at least a Club Competition licence to take part.
POINTS AFTER 6 WEEKS: 1st - Hugh Mulhearne 45pts 2nd: Liam (Beanie) Byrne 37pts 3rd: Ray Dwyer 33pts 4th: Paudie Halpin 32pts 5th: Cian Dwyer/Keith Walsh 28pts
WEEKEND SPINS Crowded House could be providing the soundtrack for cycling at the moment as it really is a case of 4 seasons in one day. Saturday's spin saw riders leaving town in a cold shower, going to Cappoquin before turning and climbing over Knockanore to Youghal Bridge and Ardmore and finally coming over Old Parish in bright, warm sunshine. We had the usual big turnout in The Square on Sunday morning, including some visitors and new riders. Welcome to you all. Despite the mixed weather there was a distinctly Euro feel in the air with Colin and Davy vying with each other for the best Italian kit. It's surely only a matter of time before someone turns up in a skeleton skinsuit. As ever there were a number of spins on the road. One group went over the Tallow, Youghal Bridge circuit. Another bunch went to Ballymac, Clogheen, The Vee, Lismore and Cappoquin meeting another group travelling in the opposite direction. We also had riders going to Lismore and Deerpark. Weekend spins will continue to meet at 9:30, on Saturdays at John Foley's and on Sundays in The Square.
BIKE WEEK – HELP WANTED FROM CLUB MEMBERS PLEASE Bike week takes place from the 18th to the 26th June and there are a number of local events taking place where some help from club members would really be appreciated. Saturday 25th June – Super Saturday – St. Augustine's College. We are looking for 2 people for bike maintenance and anyone else for assistance with bike skills. We propose to do 8 stations of skills test linking in with the sprocket rocket programme and then anyone to act as a steward for the 10km family cycle. Sunday 26th June – 30km Dawn Cycle. Even one person for this would be great. We are not sure of the amount of people we will have for this but it is pre register only. This begins at 8.00am, followed by a light complimentary breakfast at Sip'n'Surf cafe. If you can make yourself available for any of these events please contact myself at seanoduibhir@gmail.com, the club at dungarvancyclingclub@googlemail.com, or Waterford Sports Partnership at Phone: (058) 21191 Mobile: 087 7855940 www.waterfordsportspartnership.ie pjones@waterfordsportspartnership.ie
GET WELL SOON On behalf of every one at the club I'd like to wish a speedy recovery to popular clubman Maurice Fennell who sustained a bad injury while taking part in the Tour de Burren last weekend. Get well soon Maurice, hopefully we'll see you back on the bike driving it up the hills again before too long.

SUPER WEEKEND FOR DCC It was a red letter (or maybe blue letter) week for the club. Damian and Enda completed the Rás; Mark, Ray and Cian won in Wexford; and DCC members were out in force in the Race the Rás, Viking Ride and Ballymac Cycles.
TRIPLE CROWN IN CAMROSS The Frank O'Rourke Memorial races in Camross, Co. Wexford proved to be a very happy hunting ground for the racing team last Sunday with a hat trick of victories. Cian Dwyer was first on the road, in the under 16 race. Cian's been showing good form lately and has been unlucky not to get a win but today was his day. With an hour's pep talk from uncle Ray still fresh in his ears Cian kept his powder dry on the first of 2 12k laps. However at the start of the second lap Cian jumped away. Nobody went with him so he put his head down and powered away from the rest of the field to win by some distance. Well deserved Cian. I'm sure the Toblerone tasted even sweeter than normal. Mark Power was our sole representative in the A1/A2 race and he rode to a superb victory. The race was 5 22km laps of a fairly flat course with a short climb at the start of each lap and a couple of drags on the main road. At the start of lap 2 Mark got himself into a 6 man break. They worked well together and gained over 2 minutes on the bunch. These 6 were still away on the last lap. As they turned off the main road and back into the headwind towards the finish Mark saw his opportunity and jumped away, opening a gap that he held until he crossed the line. Terrific result Mark and a handsome trophy too. The A3 race covered 4 laps of the same course and taking to the line were Maurice Hickey, Ray Dwyer and Sean Dwyer. As ever Maurice and Ray were out of the traps quickly trying to instigate or get into moves. At the start of the second lap a small group broke away on the climb. Ray got across to them and then kept going with another rider, from Gorey. They were soon out of sight and stayed that way for the rest of the race. Sean and Maurice were policing things in the bunch until Maurice got a mechanical and had to retire. Ray and his companion were working hard to stay away while the chase was being mostly driven by the host Wexford Wheelers club. Their gap was being reduced but the speed of the chase was thinning out the bunch and with the break still out of sight the chase stalled a bit. Coming to the finish Ray proved the stronger of the 2 riders and soloed to victory. A super show of strength giving lie to the theory that it's a young man's game. We had a big contingent in the A4 race with Anthony Dwyer, Colin Organ, David Kiely, Eamon Phelan and Keith Walsh starting. The lads were covering 3 laps of the course and were in the mood for attacking. Eamon got himself into a break of 4 that were away for most of a lap. Once they were caught Keith got away with another rider for a lap. They too were brought back. David made a few digs on the last lap but nothing was sticking and we were heading for a bunch gallop. Coming into the finish David was getting well positioned but unfortunately got caught behind a crash when the rider in front of him went down. Anthony jumped away and opened a gap but was caught. With riders across the road from ditch to ditch it was hard to find a gap in the sprint but Colin got himself up to get 8th and a top 10 finish. So a great return from the short hop over the border for the lads. A lot of the guys are starting to hit form now and reaping the rewards of the hard club training spins and leagues. Forza Azzurri.
DAMIAN AND ENDA – MEN OF THE RÁS After 8 days, 1200 kms and some horrendous weather conditions Damian and Enda made it to the end of the Rás in Skerries last Sunday. The lads really appreciated the support from everyone as they passed through town on the way to Tramore on Stage 6. They showed boundless guts and character over the week. Chapeau chaps. Well done to you, your Comeragh Waterford colleagues and support team. Hopefully once they've recovered we might have a fuller account of their experiences next week.
SPORTIVES AND CHARITY SPINS The DCC jersey was prominent in a number of charity spins and sportives over the weekend. Well done to all who took part in the Race the Rás on Friday between Blarney and Tramore. A number of people rode the Viking Ride from Waterford city on Saturday in glorious sunshine. And we had a large contingent partaking in the Ballymac cycle on Sunday. Again all the training paid off and everybody gave a good account of themselves, at the food stops as well as on the road I believe, in keeping with DCC tradition.
O'MAHONY CYCLES SUMMER SERIES – BEANIE ON THE DOUBLE Week 3 of the Summer Series, and despite Flower sporting another blast from the past yellow jersey it's Beanie Byrne who is firmly in yellow now after his second win in succession. Once again group 1 organised themselves into a hard working unit and stayed away for the duration, despite another sub-50 from the scratch group who managed to catch groups 2 & 3 before Modeligo. Beanie held off Michael Dwyer in the sprint up Ballinamuck. Let's just hope he didn't undo all the good work on Friday night. Yet again the organisation and the safety was brilliant. A big thank you again to all those who made the route as safe as possible for us; lead cars and motorbike riders. Thanks also to Tony and Siobhan for their generous sponsorship. Sign on from 6:30 at the lay by on the Clonmel road (a couple of miles up the hill from the Master McGrath monument). Please note that the ENTRY FEE IS 5 EURO this year to cover increased safety costs. Also, you must hold at least a Club Competition licence to take part.
Results, Round 3: 1st: Beanie Byrne 2nd: Michael Dwyer 3rd: Paudie Halpin 4th: Martin Hayes 5th: Liam Byrne 6th: Michael Hearne 7th: Michael Dunford
WEEKEND SPINS The Rás and sportives accounted for a lot of the spinning last weekend. On Saturday a big group left a bit earlier than normal and headed to Tramore to catch the departure of Stage 7. On Sunday a group went to Lismore, Knockanore and Youghal Bridge with other groups going to Lismore and Deerpark. Weekend spins will continue to meet at 9:30, on Saturdays at John Foley's and on Sundays in The Square. Also note that as next Monday is a bank holiday there will be a spin leaving John Foley's at 9:30.
CYCLING QUOTE “How can I convey the perfection of my comfort on the bicycle, the completeness of my union with her, the sweet responses she gave me at every particle of her frame? I felt that I had known her for many years and that she had known me and that we understood each other utterly.” ~ Flann O’Brien

It was another victorious weekend for Dungarvan cycling as Marc Flavin kept the Jim O'Leary memorial trophy in the club, soloing to another fine victory in Whitechurch, Co.Cork while another Old Boro native, home on holiday, Brian Truman won the Ken O'Keefe memorial. St Finbarrs CC were the hosts and racing was over a short 7 mile lap that went downhill for the first half with a long drag back to the start/finish and a little kick 500m out.
Next off was the A2/A3 race with the club represented by Enda Donnelly, Damian Travers, Maurice Hickey and Sean Dwyer. This was over 7 laps and Enda, Maurice and Damian were on the attack from the gun with Sean taking up more of a full back role, making sure no-one escaped out the back. It was attack after attack. Enda and Maurice went up the road early but were brought back. Damian had a few digs but nothing was sticking. Enda was unlucky to puncture but got himself back onto the bunch. A break of 8 got away on the fourth lap including Brian Truman and Youghal's Eoin Whyte, a regular visitor to our leagues. They maintained a small gap ahead of the bunch and on the final lap as the attacks flew off the front of the bunch a chase group formed which included Damian. They closed the gap but with not everyone in the group prepared to do their share of the work the break managed to stay clear with Brian taking the win ahead of Carrick's John Dempsey and Eoin taking third. Damian followed just behind, grabbing a top 10 finish with Enda, Maurice and Sean finishing high up in the bunch just behind. Good performances all round with Damian, Enda and Maurice getting in some good aggressive racing and Sean adjusting well to the increased speed and distance; he'll find his attacking legs soon. Next away was the A4 race, over 5 laps with 3 DCC members taking to the line; Anthony Dwyer, Colin Organ and Marc Flavin. A puncture just before the start almost ended Colin’s day prematurely, but a lot of cursing and a quick tube change sorted this out. True to form on lap 1 Marc had a dig. No one was willing to work with him so he sat up. Lap 2 was pretty uneventful. At the top of the hill at the end of lap 3 Marc waved farewell to the bunch and A4 racing. There was one man ahead of him and they worked together for a while. On the last lap Marc rode the rider from Cobh off his wheel and went for home. He had a gap of 55 seconds at the start of the last lap. This was down to 35 seconds at the bottom of the hill but the finishing line came in time for Marc and he claimed his second win in two weeks, taking home the Jim O'Leary cup won by Keith Walsh last year. Anthony and Colin finished well up in the bunch. Well done to Marc, another very impressive win. A3 racing is now waiting. I wonder how long before he is up to A2?
O'MAHONY CYCLES SUMMER SERIES – FLOWER POWER Flower Power is back in fashion and I don't mean San Francisco hippies (or Damian's daisy wheels) but one of Dungarvan's finest sporting sons, Robert Power, who confirmed that the comeback is well under way as he stormed to a fine win on the first night of the Summer Series last Wednesday. We had a fantastic turnout for round 1 and Frank got the handicaps almost spot on with Robert's middle group catching the first group just at the bottom of Ballinamuck and the scratch group not far behind. Robert took the win just ahead of Cian Dwyer and Ken Costello after a strong gallop up Ballinamuck. A big thank you to Frank Browne, Richie Power, Mario Flavin and Richard Walsh for driving lead cars and our Moto Team; Tom Moroney, Mossie Quinn, Frank Geary, Tom Fennell and Anthony Fennell; all who made the route as safe as possible for us. Next week will see a few changes to time gaps, group ability and to round it off, a finish back up Colligan!!!! Sign on from 6:30 at the lay by on the Clonmel road (a couple of miles up the hill from the Master McGrath monument). Please note that the ENTRY FEE IS 5 EURO this year to cover increased safety costs. Also, you must hold at least a Club Competition licence to take part.
Results, Round 1: 1st Robert Power 2nd Cian Dwyer 3rd Ken Costello 4th Colin Organ 5th Keith Walsh 6th Mark Crowley 7th Benny Flynn
WEEKEND SPINS Saturday saw riders head for Cappoquin and Lismore before going over The Vee to Clogheen, Newcastle and Ballymacarbry. A large crowd in The Square on Sunday took advantage of a number of different spins on offer. We had a group going to Lismore. A big group headed for Cappoquin, Lismore, Ballyduff and Tallow before returning via Camphire. Another group headed for The Vee from the Lismore side. Is The Vee the new Tallow-Youghal bridge? Weekend spins will continue to meet at 9:30, on Saturdays at John Foley's and on Sundays in The Square.
STEADY GROUP UPDATE Changes are on the way for the Steady Group. Due to very large numbers in recent weeks, and because of a wide variety of ability, it has been decided that it is necessary to divide this group in two. Many within the group have requested this, and it has been mentioned to most cyclists on the road. One easier group will cycle generally to Lismore and Deerpark at an average pace of 25k per hour (about 15mph) while the stronger cyclists will separate and decide on their own routes at a slightly faster pace. This separation is now necessary if we are to be able to continue to attract new members to the club. The 27k Pace Group (approx) will leave the Square separately, ahead of the 25k Pace Group. Pádraig and Eddie will lead the 25k pace group. We STRONGLY advise members to move up to the faster 27k Pace Group when they are ready. If you are not sure, try it for a few weeks. You can always drop back if you feel it is too fast for you. Also, please note that there will be a bit more friendly advice given out to those in the 25k Pace Group, in order to add to the safety of the group. Good manners when cycling in a group: When at the front of the group, it is your responsibility to remember that other cyclists may not be as strong as you. If you are ahead of the cyclist who is supposed to be beside you, then you are being irresponsible. Think about it!
MOUNT LEINSTER CHALLENGE Well done to Pádraig De Burca, Kevin Forde, Martin Veale, Maurice Fennell, Kevin O'Sullivan who braved the cold and wind for the Mount Leinster challenge last Saturday. A tough, but very enjoyable spin by all accounts.
SUPPORT YOUR MEN OF THE RÁS As you will know, 2 of our riders, Damian Travers and Enda Donnelly will be participating in the 2011 edition of the An Post Rás. The lads have been putting in some savage training over the last few months and will take to the line as part of a Comeragh Waterford outfit in Dunboyne next Sunday mixing it with the likes of the An Post Sean Kelly team, Rapha Condor Sharp, ISD Lampre and the gloriously named Wonderful Pistachios over 8 stages.
Stage 1, Sunday May 22: Dunboyne – Portumna, 148 kms Stage 2, Monday May 23: Portumna – Kilrush, 164kms Stage 3, Tuesday May 24: Kilrush – Castleisland, 175kms Stage 4, Wednesday May 25: Castleisland – Castletownbere, 142kms Stage 5, Thursday May 26: Castletownbere – Blarney, 156kms Stage 6, Friday May 27: Blarney – Tramore, 172kms Stage 7, Saturday May 28: Tramore – Kildare, 157kms Stage 8, Sunday May 29: Kildare – Skerries, 133kms
Stage 6 passes through Dungarvan before heading down the coast road to the stage finish in Tramore. Please make an effort to get out and support the lads along the route. There's also a number of members taking part in the Race the Rás charity event, riding the stage ahead of the race, and they will appreciate your support, financially as well as vocally.

CONDOLENCES On behalf of Dungarvan Cycling Club we would like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Bobby Power (Carrick Wheelers) who passed away recently. R.I.P
CYCLING QUOTE "It is a sublime thing to suffer and be stronger."
Week 3 of the Liam Rossiter PYT saw 39 riders signing on. On an ideal night for cycling there were some more very fast times to give the Summer Series handicapper something to think about. David Power came closest, just a second out from his preducted time. David Quigley was once again the fastest rider of the night, coming in under 35 minutes. Thanks to Ray and Sean for timekeeping. Check the club's Facebook for some more action shots. Tony O'Mahony and Benny Flynn are the timekeepers for Round 4 tonight (Wednesday). Sign on is at John Foley's, Kilrush from 6:30. Remember, it's not the fastest cyclist that wins but whoever finishes closest to their predicted time. There are 2 nights remaining, tonight & 27th April. Many thanks to Liam for his generous sponsorship once again.

RACING TEAM UPDATE
Today's race report is brought to you by the letter S - S is for suffering. In the A1/A2 we had Mark Power, Enda Donnelly, Damian Travers and Brian (I should be studying) Hallissey. It was four laps of a hilly course featuring the dreaded Kearneys hill and the Sky road. The race started like the clappers with jump after jump as people tried to go away, Damian and Mark were active here trying to get in a group that might get away with Brian and Enda ensuring they stayed near the front. The break went at the bottom of Kearneys hill on the first lap with Mark in the group. The pace was hot and heavy in the break and Mark drifted back to the chasing bunch but soon lost contact from his earlier efforts. Enda's running training from earlier in the week came back to haunt him, leaving little in the legs for the hills; lesson learnt. Damian kept himself near the front of the bunch to give himself plenty of drift space, just in case. Brian, as usual, was at home on the hills, showing a complete lack of respect by chatting to people whilst Damian was trying to suffer with dignity. Once over the top the break could be seen and more jumps were made and the pace was hectic whilst trying to catch/bridge to the break, Damian succeeded in getting away a few times but it never stuck and at the bottom of Kearneys hill on lap 2 it was all back together, again Damian surprised himself by climbing at the front of the bunch. On lap 3 the chasing bunch split. Damian had a small gap with 2 other riders. When the bunch made contact again another 5 riders drifted off the front and with nobody willing to chase they stayed away. There was good riding from Brian and Damian at the end, taking turns, rolling through trying to keep the pace high and get some good training in. Damian then cycled home 'cos the race just wasn't hard enough (So why no points - ahem P.R.O).
Maurice Hickey and Ray Dwyer were next away in the A3 race, covering 3 laps of the course. The lads' default mode is attack and Sunday was no different. However despite a number of goes nothing was getting away. Maurice tried to get away on his own a couple of miles out but was brought back and the race came down to a big bunch finish with Maurice getting in to the top 10.
Finally, we had a big contingent in the 2 lap A4 race; Anthony Dwyer, John Flynn, Sean Dwyer, Colin Organ, Eamon Phelan, Marc Flavin, David Power and new recruit David Kiely took to the line. After a very steady opening couple of kilometres Marc decided he'd had enough and jumped away with another rider. They opened up a good gap, out of sight of the bunch and stayed clear to the top of Kearneys lane but were reeled in on the straight road to Rathgormack. Unfortunately John punctured just coming into Rathgormack, ending his race prematurely. On the drop down into Carrick Sean launched himself from the front of the bunch and quickly opened up a big gap. He rode hard and was still well clear at the start of the second ascent of Kearneys lane. However by the top the chasing bunch were seeing glimpses of him up ahead and his legs were starting to go. He was eventually caught on the Rathgormack road by a group of about 15 riders that included Marc and David Kiely. Marc and David tried to jump on the descent into Carrick but couldn't get away. Sean had one more go about 2km out but had nothing left in the legs. As it wound up for the sprint finish Marc made his move possibly a bit too early but still got up for 7th, Sean and David just behind and the rest of the lads coming in with the next bunch. Well done Marc, the comeback is well under way (if the shaved legs are anything to go by).
Cian Dwyer was racing up the country in Stamullen. I hope to have details on his progress next week.
Rás Mumhann next weekend for the DCC boys with Brian, Damian, Mark and Enda travelling to the Kingdom. It's seen as the mini Rás and should give a good indication as to where the lads are in relation to their training for the big one in May, and for Brian's points in the leaving status.
WEEKEND SPINS On top of the normal weekend spins we had riders representing the club at a few different sportives over the weekend. On Saturday a group of 14 went to Lismore, The Vee, Clogheen and Araglin before returning home via Lismore. Also last Saturday training for Wicklow 200k in mid-june kicked up a step this weekend as some intending participants tackled the bigger hills, and they don't come bigger than Mahon falls and the Mámá. Having tackled this on six occasions this year, we were delighted for once to have a nice tailwind! Kevin, Declan and Pádraig were joined on the day by Tour de France stage winner Martin Earley, visiting the area for the food festival. Lots of sound advice given free of charge. Back in Dungarvan, the spin seemed a wee bit short so we tackled into the climb to Old Parish and on to Ardmore. The following day, Sunday, Padraig, Declan and Martin participated in the Tour de Foothills Challenge, 100k from Naas down to the beautiful Blessington lakes, taking in sections of the Wicklow route. A fast last 25k brought to an end a wonderful weekend in the saddle. Hot meal, and massage at the finish! Anyone interested in Wicklow this year might like to join with us for midday Saturday steady long spins. Sunday saw 8 riders travel to Kilmallock for the Hub Tour. Eamon Doherty, Kevin O'Sullivan, Frank Browne, Maurice Fennell, Tony Hickey, Neal Power and Emma Walsh completed the 120km trip. Sounds like a good day was had by all. Those that couldn't resist the lure of the food festival worked up an appetite on a number of routes. We had riders going down the coast road, some going on to Fenor, coming back on the main road with other groups heading for Lismore and Deerpark. A belated well done to Robert Power who spent the weekend before last riding the Paris Roubaix sportive in the company of Sean Kelly on the Saturday before watching the race on Sunday and taking some excellent photographs. How do the cobbles compare to the bog road Flower?
Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley's, Kilrush on Saturdays and The Square on Sundays, both at 9:30.

O'MAHONY CYCLES SUMMER SERIES – YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU Given the popularity of the PYT league thoughts are turning to the Summer Series. The club will be looking for people to assist with marshalling. If you're available to help out please contact Ger Wyley, Tony O'Mahony or Frank Browne. If anyone has a motorbike or knows someone with a motorbike who'd be willing to help out that would be great. Also lead cars will be required - again if you can help out for an hour on a wednesday night please do.
CYCLING QUOTE “The bike continues to take me to places I never imagined I would travel. And, even the local routes I ride evolve daily, never becoming mundane. Within the silence of a dormant forest in the winter to the electric buzz of a vibrant coastal town in the midsummer our senses are constantly engaged in a diversity of contrasting stimuli. The emotion I felt on a bike as a young boy hasn’t dissolved with maturity. It’s what keeps me riding.” Michael Barry

There was another massive turnout for week 2 of the Liam Rossiter Predict Your Time competition with 48 riders pitting themselves against the clock and the Whitechurch circuit. The TT specialists were out in force with last year's Munster A1 silver medallist and the A3 & A4 gold medallists in attendance. The winner on the night was Aidan McCarthy who got his timing exactly right. There were some very fast times recorded with Comeragh's David Quigley setting the fastest time. Check the club's Facebook for some more action shots. Ray and Sean Dwyer are the timekeepers for Round 3 tonight (Wednesday). Sign on is at John Foley's, Kilrush from 6:30. Remember, it's not the fastest cyclist that wins but whoever finishes closest to their predicted time. The competition will run until 27th April. Many thanks to Liam for his generous sponsorship once again.
RACING TEAM UPDATE Most of our senior riders made the short trip to Minane Bridge, just outside Cork city for the Edge Classic. An absolute cracker of a day and an absolute scorcher of a course. This was only the second running of the race but it's already gained a reputation for itself as one of the toughest on the calendar. It was over an undulating 16km circuit with a couple of steep climbs and some very technical descents. The A1/A2 race was 6 laps of the circuit and we had Enda Donnelly, Brian Hallissey, Mark Power and Damian Travers taking to the line. Enda and Brian tried an early break on the hill but got brought back. No sooner had they been caught than the break of the day got away. A group of 4 including 3 Edge riders stayed away for the rest of the race with The Edge's Timmy Barry winning from Paidi O'Brien. Mark and Damian came in with the chasing groups with Enda and Brian's early efforts taking their toll. Next away were the A3s with Ray Dwyer and Maurice Hickey completing 4 laps of the course. This was an aggressive race with attack after attack decimating the bunch throughout the race. The lads stayed with the leaders though. Just before the finish a Limerick rider broke away and held off the bunch on the finishing hill with Ray coming in just outside the places and Maurice right behind him. Finally we had Anthony Dwyer, Sean Dwyer, Eamon Phelan, David Power and Keith Walsh in the 3 lap A4 race. Sean's race started badly when he lost his bottle (literally this time) on the first bend. On a hot day this was only to add to his suffering although Keith did a good job as super domestique. David led the group up the first climb but was unlucky to get caught out when a wheel was lost on a descent and despite a big effort couldn't regain contact. Sean put in a dig with another rider near the end of the first lap but couldn't stay away. The expected war of attrition turned into a bit of a phoney war as a cagey race restricted the attacks, a large Blarney contingent covering everything. Unfortunately Keith punctured on the last lap, ending his race. On the descent into Minane Bridge 2 riders crashed right in front of Sean. He managed to avoid them but this scuppered his (admittedly somewhat slim) chances of getting up for the sprint. Eamon however was well positioned as always and drove on up the hill to get 6th place, a good reward for a gutsy ride. Chapeau Sir.
Meanwhile Cian Dwyer was up the other end of the country for the 3 stage Rás na nÓg in Drogheda. As ever Cian was in Bernard Hinault mode, constantly on the attack, getting himself into breaks and spending a long time up the road on his own in stage 3. He eventually finished 16th overall in a high quality field. Well done Cian.
Off road, Tony Hickey and Emma Walsh headed to Lough Derg. Not the bare feet and dry bread Lough Derg, though there was a lot of suffering involved. They were taking part in the Mountain Bike Challenge. The lads completed a very tough stage over Slieve Bearnagh with some savage climbing followed by a Time Trial with Emma coming 2nd overall in the Ladies race. Well done Emma.
Meanwhile we also had Jason Travers and Brian Hallissey taking part in the Butlerstown duathlon with Jason coming 11th overall. Great stuff. The little green bottles must be working.
WEEKEND SPINS It was another fantastic weekend for cycling and on Saturday a big group headed down the coast road for Bonmahon. Some riders turned off at Seafield for Kilmac with others heading on to Kill and Kilmeaden, coming back by Newtown and Mahonbridge. There was a huge crowd out on Sunday morning. 26 riders headed for Lismore, with some returning by Deerpark and others going on to tackle The Vee. Another group of over 20 riders went to Tallow and Youghal Bridge, coming back via Ardmore and Old Parish. QUIZ NIGHT A HUGE SUCCESS There was a tremendous turnout for the Rás Fundraising Quiz in Minnie's last Friday night. Many thanks to all involved and to everyone who attended, some of whom travelled a bit. There were some fiendish questions, a good craic and a winning table of Emma, Frank, Earl and David. It's just a matter of the 2 lads getting the bodies ready now.

RECORD NUMBERS FOR LIAM ROSSITER PREDICT YOUR TIME There was a fantastic turnout for round 1 of Liam Rossiter PYT with 48 people putting themselves up against the clock. Winner on the night was Anthony Dwyer, 12 seconds out. Fastest was Hugh Mulhearne. We had a bit of confusion with wrong and no numbers being called at the finish and a couple of people taking wrong turns but hopefully that will be sorted next week. There were some very quick times and some improvements from last year. Full results and photos are on Facebook (along with 1 or 2 other very dodgy pics). Thanks to all for supporting. Round 2 is tonight (Wednesday). Ger Wyley and Maurice Fennell are timekeepers. Sign on is at John Foley's, Kilrush from 6:30. Remember, it's not the fastest cyclist that wins but whoever finishes closest to their predicted time. The competition will run for 5 weeks with the last night on 27th April. Many thanks to Liam for his generous sponsorship once again. FULL TIMES HERE
13 riders made the trip to Fermoy last Sunday for the Silver Pail GP with the club represented in all categories and a few season debuts made. Racing was over a fast 20km circuit with a short climb at the start of each lap. The A1/A2 race was first off with Brian Hallissey, Damian Travers and Enda Donnelly taking to the line for 5 laps of the circuit. Enda got himself into a break of 10 on the first lap and this turned out to be the winning break, staying away for the duration of the race. While Enda was burying himself to stay away Damian and Brian were working hard in the bunch closing down any attacks. Coming into the finish 3 riders broke from the group with Wexford Wheelers' Martin Mizgayski holding off Comeragh's Robin Kelly for the win with Enda finishing with the rest of the breakaway for a very good top 10 finish. Good stuff Enda. Brian almost took a prize for the most Euro rider for his use of sunglasses and poise drinking coffee afterwards but the snood was a step too far. Maurice Hickey and Ray Dwyer were next away in the A3 race, covering 4 laps. As ever both were active throughout the race, getting themselves into breaks in the first couple of laps. On the third lap a group of 20 went clear and following an intervention by the officials for safety reasons were allowed to stay away and the 2 lads finished with the main bunch unable to chase down the break. We had 7 participants in the 3 lap A4 race. Colin Organ, John Flynn, Eamon Phelan, Emma Walsh, Keith Walsh, Anthony Dwyer and Sean Dwyer all took to the line. The headwind on the first part of the circuit made breakaways difficult as Sean and Keith found out early in the race. This pattern continued for the rest of the race with nobody able to get away. Back on the main road the tail wind kept the speed too high for anyone to try and make an early jump and it came down to another bunch gallop. None of the lads were able to find a gap or the right wheel though, with all finishing safely in the bunch. They had no bother getting through to the buttered brack and chocolate cake afterwards though. Cian Dwyer was in the under 16 race and gave his usual attacking performance but again found the wind hampering any breakaways. The race eventually came down to a bunch sprint with Cian taking 7th. Well done Cian.
WEEKEND SPINS As well as welcoming new faces it's always great to see some old faces returning for the weekend spins. Spring has definitely sprung now and last weekend had terrific weather for cycling. On Saturday morning (once the chatting was done) a big group headed off in the sunshine to Cappoquin and Lismore before climbing to Ballysaggart and Araglin, coming back by Ballyduff and Tallow. Sunday saw another big crowd in The Square and a couple of groups on the road heading to Cappoquin, Lismore and Deerpark with riders going in to Knockanore, Youghal, Ardmore and Old Parish. Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley's, Kilrush on Saturdays and The Square on Sundays, both at 9:30.

LIAM ROSSITER PREDICT YOUR TIME STARTS TONIGHT Tonight (Wednesday) sees the start of the club's competitive season with the Liam Rossiter Predict Your Time competition. Sign on is at John Foley's, Kilrush from 6:30 with the first rider off at 6:45. Timekeepers for tonight are Frank and Emma. RACING TEAM UPDATE – RÁS LUIMNI 7 riders travelled to Caherconlish, Co. Limerick last Sunday for Rás Luimni. The course was generally fast and flat, over a 25km circuit with a short climb at the start of each lap. Cian Dwyer, on his first race in his new Dungarvan colours was first away in the U-16 race over 2 laps. As ever he was constantly on the attack but the breaks weren't sticking and the race came down to a close bunch sprint with Cian picking up 6th after a photo to decide the placings. Mark Power was our sole representative in the A1/A2 race over 4 laps. The winning break got away very early and included Dungarvan native Rory Wyley. Mark had some mechanicals and pulled out, the race being won by Paidi O'Brien with Rory claiming 4th. Maurice Hickey was next away in the A3 race. This was a 3 lap race and after a quiet first 2 laps a break of 3 got away at the start of the third lap. Maurice got across to them and they were joined by 4 others. They worked hard but were caught a couple of kms from the end, with Maurice finishing in the bunch. The long straight roads made it very difficult to get out of sight of the bunch. Finally we had the A4 race with Keith Walsh, David Power, Sean Dwyer and Anthony Dwyer lining up. Anthony'd put down a tough week on the bike and possibly paid for it when wheels were being dropped on the hill and found himself having to work hard to stay with the bunch. Sean was feeling good and attacked early with another rider. After a while a few more came across but weren't willing to ride through and eventually the bunch closed in. Just before the catch Sean jumped again with a rider from the Sportif club. They worked well together but just 2 of them weren't going to hold off the field and were brought back. After that the race stayed together, David and Keith sticking close to the action at the front. Meanwhile Anthony's chase group had decided that they didn't really want to chase so he ended up doing most of the work. As they approached the last few kms any Death or Glory attacks the boys might have had shelved as they were boxed in with little room for manoeuvre and they opted to stay out of trouble as a chaotic sprint ensued. It looks like we're going to have a big turnout from the club at Fermoy next week and hopefully some good results after Ray's and Cian's successes there last year.
WEEKEND SPINS A beautiful spring Saturday morning saw a big group (with 2 olympians) heading for Carrick, across to Fiddown, Kilmeaden and home on the main road. On Sunday morning 2 groups took the old Kelly 100km route to Carrick, Clonmel and Ballymac. Only 3 people in the fast group though? Come on shams. Another group went to Lismore, returning via Deerpark. Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley's, Kilrush on Saturdays and The Square on Sundays, both at 9:30.
CLUB SPINS POLICY As we have seen a big increase in the numbers joining the weekend club spins the committee felt that it would be a good idea to outline the club's policy on spins to avoid confusion and to ensure that people get the best cycling experience. There are usually 3 groups leaving The Square on Sunday mornings; a fast group, middle group, and a beginners/steady group. As a flavour of what to expect from each group the fast group will generally do a 3-4 hour spin with average speeds of 19-20 mph (30-32 kph) and the middle group will do 3-4 hours usually averaging 17-18 mph (27-29 kph). The beginners/steady group will cycle at a pace suitable for everybody, generally about 15mph (25 kph), with a range of distances to suit all (anything from 15k to 50k). There will be committee members in the groups to control the pace, especially at the start of the spin to ensure that the group is all together. If you are unsure as to what group you should join in The Square introduce yourself to somebody in a club jersey and they will be able to direct you to a suitable group. Club policy is to try to keep the groups together for the entire spin. On a long climb, while some might wish to test themselves more than others the group should always regroup at the top. Similiarly the club's puncture policy is that if a rider gets a puncture, while someone can stay to assist, the rest of the group should ride on for 5 minutes and then turn as a group to go back to the punctured cyclist.
BEGINNNERS WELCOME If you have been thinking of joining with Dungarvan Cycling club for the Sunday morning Steady Eddie spin, be assured that we will take good care of you, provide plenty good advice, and stretch your fitness level to allow you to meet your cycling potential. CYCLING QUOTE "A dictionary is the only place that success comes before work. Hard work is the price we must pay for success. I think you can accomplish anything if you're willing to pay the price." MARCH 20th 2011 MARK POWER WINS CARRICK WHEELERS CUP The annual Carrick Wheelers Cup held on St. Patrick's day saw Mark Power pull off a terrific victory in a very high quality field with a brave attacking move. The A1/A2 race was over 3 laps of the Glenbower, Kilsheelan circuit and alongside Mark at the start line were Damian Travers, Enda Donnelly and Brian Hallissey. The race stayed together for the first lap but on lap 2 a group of 17 went clear including Brian and Mark. This group stayed together for the rest of the race with Damian and Enda covering any moves from the bunch. 5 miles out Mark struck out for home, dug deep and held off the group coming in 20 seconds clear of the bunch. Brian finished in the break group with Damian and Enda comfortable in the bunch. Congrats to Mark from all your clubmates. We also had 4 riders in the 2 lap A3/A4 race. David Power, Mark Flavin and Sean Dwyer went off with the A4s, 2 minutes ahead of Maurice Hickey in the A3s. While the A3 bunch were working hard to close the gap the A4 lads were very active and never far from the front in the effort to stay away as well as trying to engineer a few breaks. The catch was made at the end of the first lap and with one huge group on the road Sean's nerves got the better of him and he retreated to the relative safety of the back of the bunch for the rest of the race. Mark, David and Maurice stayed active though and Maurice in particular seemed to be in every attempted break. The bunch was still together getting back into Carrick though but none of the lads managed to get into the prizes. DES HANLON MEMORIAL, CARLOW Last Sunday saw the racing team travel to Carlow for the Des Hanlon memorial, one of the toughest races on the calendar. Details are scarce at the time of writing but it was a tough day at the office for some of the lads. First off were the A1/A2s with Mark, Damian, Enda and Brian taking on a gruelling 145km course. The winning break got away very early. Damian and Enda finished in the bunch, happy to add a very tough spin to their Rás training accounts. Mark finished just behind them. Brian found the going tough. Maurice was our sole representative in the A3 race, just over 100km. As ever he spent the early part of the race on the attack. However this took its toll on the climbs and he too found the going tough later on. Last off was Sean in the 65km A4 race. On the climb out of Castlecomer the bunch split in two. He was in the front group but when the road kicked up again and the field started to splinter he found himself one of the splinters. A group of about 10-12 stayed clear with the winner breaking away over the last couple of kms and the rest of the field finishing in ones and twos. Looks like Sean's Jan Ullrich inspired winter training and diet plan is taking its toll. More hills and less nachos required.
WEEKEND SPINS There was a big group out on St. Patrick's day and they went to Cappoquin, Lismore, Ballyduff, Tallow and Camphire. We had 2 fine, bright mornings for cycling last weekend. Although the appearance of a few pairs of white legs did cause a bit of glare for other cyclists. On Saturday a big group headed to Cappoquin, Lismore, Knockanore and Youghal Bridge. Sunday saw 2 groups going to Ballymac, Clogheen and over The Vee, with one group returning via The Cats and the other going through Lismore. We had 21 riders going to Lismore with the main group returning by Deerpark and others going to Ballyduff, Tallow and Camphire. Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley's, Kilrush on Saturdays and The Square on Sundays, both at 9:30.
QUIZ NIGHT COMING UP As a fundraiser for our prospective 2011 Rás riders there will be a table quiz in Minnie's Bar on Friday, April 8th at 9PM. CYCLING QUOTE “If you never confront pain, you're missing the essence of the sport. Without pain, there's no adversity. Without adversity, no challenge. Without challenge, no improvement. No improvement, no sense of accomplishment and no deep-down joy. Might as well be playing Tiddly-Winks.”
We had 4 riders making the trip to Broadford, Co. Limerick for the Cycling Pursuits Cup last Sunday. Enda Donnelly, Damian Travers, Anthony Dwyer & Sean Dwyer took to the line on a cold, dry March afternoon. The course was a testing one with a steep 3km climb featuring in each lap. First off were Damian and Enda in the A1/A2 race, over 5 laps of the circuit. The A2s were given a 3 min headstart on the A1s. As usual the A2 bunch took off like the clappers; a group of about 20 with about 8 willing to work, the rest awaiting the eventual catch, with Enda and Damian not shirking their workload it has to be said. The hill was met after about 20 mins and was always going to shake things up. Enda wasn't feeling the best on the hill and started to drift off the back, never to get back on; just over a bout of illness so maybe it was a step too soon. He'll be back, no worries. Damian soldiered on up the hill as he always does. The A2 bunch had split to pieces at this stage with about 8 remaining on the starters. The majority of the A2s rode up and over for the next few laps with the time checks being called out and the A1s closing in. The catch was made on the third lap about half way up the climb. Damian steadied himself and readied himself for the impending attacks which started immediately but he hung on and went over the top with all the main contenders. On the penultimate lap he lost contact with the A1s near the top of the hill but with some strong riding on the flat made the catch back on to the A1s at about midway through the last lap. Again the attacks were constant and fierce, each one slowly sapping the strength from already weary legs. The first break was made here with an Edge rider and a St Finbarrs rider getting clear whilst the remaining bunch looked for someone to chase them down. They stayed away to the finish. The last climb, and Damian readied himself for the pain and torture, and the fifth ascendance of it didn't disappoint. Losing contact fairly early on, he rode tempo and never lost too much distance on the lead group, chasing them back on the downhill section finishing just behind the main bunch. A good race, an excellent circuit, very tough and one to waken those legs from their winter hibernation, Enda rolled around with the A3's getting in some good tough miles and vowed to fight another day. We had no riders in the A3 race. Next off were Anthony and Sean in the A4 race, resplendent with their pink numbers. There was a huge field of 80 riders in this one. The over 40s were given a minute head start which suited Anthony. Sean has another couple of months left in the flush of youth so took off with the rest of the mullocks. As they reached the first climb the first group had started to splinter and by the end of the lap 1 all had been caught. With about half of the field still together at the start of the climb on lap 2 it was still quite congested. However, as the pressure went on at the front a lot of wheels were getting dropped. Anthony was unlucky to find himself boxed in while Sean was a bit luckier and found a clear path to stay with the lead riders. By the end of lap 2 we were down to a lead group of about 20. Anthony had formed a chase group and was working hard to regain contact but found few other takers to assist. Third time up the climb and the legs were beginning to hurt. As the lead group started to split and more wheels were lost, a group of 8 went clear. Sean found himself in a chasing group of 8 but were not going to catch the leaders in the plummet down to the finish. As they approached the finish he launched himself off the front and held off a challenge from a couple of other riders to finish about 10 seconds behind the leaders and claim a top 10 spot with Anthony not far behind leading in his group. An extremely well organised and marshalled race along with a challenging course made for a great day's racing. Also racing last weekend was Mark Power who was in Meath riding the Mick Lally Memorial and the Cycleways cup. I hope to have more details next week but going on the photos on irishcycling Mark was away in a break for a long time on Saturday.
Please note that next week's race in Banteer has been postponed until further notice due to a clash with another event in the village.
WEEKEND SPINS Dry, if a tad cold this weekend. On Saturday a group went around Tallow and Youghal Bridge, somehow managing to have a headwind all the way round. Sunday saw a number of routes being taken with one bunch heading down the Coast Road to Bunmahon, and on to Annestown and Fenor before heading across to Kilmeaden and back the main road. Other groups went to Lismore, Deerpark; some riders going on to Knockanore and Youghal Bridge.

DUATHLONS Michael Moloney and Jason Travers appear to be having a ding dong battle on the local duathlon scene lately. Both claimed top 20 finishes in the recent Tramore duathlon, following up on great performances in the Clonea duathlon. Jason was spotted at it again in Carrick this weekend. Anyone selling a set of Tri bars?
CYCLING QUOTE "When man invented the bicycle, he reached the peak of his attainments. Here was a machine of precision and balance for the convenience of man. And unlike subsequent inventions for mans convenience, the more he used it the fitter his body became. Here, for once was a product of mans brain that was entirely beneficial to those who used it, and of no harm or irritation to others. Progress should have stopped when man invented the bicycle." – Elizabeth West
Congratulations to Brian Hallissey on being selected for the Irish u-23 squad for the coming season having impressed at a 2 day development camp in Omagh last weekend. Another young rider impressing was Cian Dwyer who spent the weekend at a training camp in Kanturk and was selected on the U16 Munster squad for an Irish development camp in Kanturk next weekend. The two lads are putting in some quality training at the moment and it's paying off. Well done shams.
WEEKEND SPINS We had ideal cycling weather last weekend. On Saturday two groups went to Ballymac and Clogheen before climbing The Vee into a tough headwind, coming back via Lismore and Cappoquin. We had a number of gruppi tackling different routes on Sunday. One group went to Lismore with some riders returning, others going to Deerpark and a few more going on to Ballyduff. Another group went to Lismore, with a climb over Knockanore to Youghal bridge before coming home by Ardmore and Old Parish. A third group went to Ballymac, Clonmel and Carrick. A few lads took the opportunity to get an early season look at Seskin Hill, with one rider getting a closer look at it than he had in mind. There was a fair bit of debris on the roads after Saturday night's storm which resulted in a few punctures and the little pumps being whipped out. A good time then to remind people of the club's puncture policy: In the event of a cyclist puncturing on a group spin the club policy is for the group to ride on for approximately five minutes before turning in order and going back for the rider. Another cyclist may stay back and assist the punctured cyclist.
Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s Kilrush on Saturday and The Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am.

AN POST RÁS Our prospective men of the 2011 Rás were given a boost when the route was announced this week and stage 6 from Blarney will pass through Dungarvan on Friday, May 27th before heading down the coast road to the stage finish in Tramore. Further incentive for Damian and Enda to get the training in so that they can impress their tifosi as they pass through the Old Boro. Rumours that Anthony Dwyer and John Flynn signed up when they heard the coast road was on the parcours haven't been confirmed. As mentioned a few weeks back the lads will be fundraising soon and this will be kicking off with a table quiz in a few weeks. Watch this space for further details.

CYCLING QUOTE “When in doubt, when in fear, be aggressive. Commit yourself and never look back."
6th FEBRUARY 2011 Continuing on from last week's Sesame Street theme, last weekend's cycling was most emphatically brought to you by the letter W: wild, wet and windy. However, gale force winds and horizontal rain still couldn't keep some of our hard nuts off the roads. A small bunch and the odd lone cyclist were spotted out and about on Saturday. Despite more atrocious conditions on Sunday, the numbers were still well into double figures. One group went around the Tallow-Youghal circuit (or Strada Di Ray if you've been keeping up your Italian). Others went to Lismore with some going on to Knockanore and Youghal before returning home. Admirable dedication from you all.

CYCLING QUOTE “Life may not be about your bike, but it sure can help you get through it."
30th January 2011 Last weekend's cycling was brought to you by the letter C: crisp, clear, calm, and cold; and we had big crowds taking advantage of it. Saturday's spins took the N25 into the easterly wind with one group going to Kilmeaden, Tramore, and back the coast road through Fenor, Annestown, Bonmahon, and the Five Cross (what was wrong with Ballyvouney lads?). Another group went to Kilmeaden, Kill, and Bonmahon. There were over 30 cyclists in The Square on Sunday. We had one bunch going down the main road to Youghal, Killeagh, Castlemartyr and Midleton before returning the same route. A second bunch went to Cappoquin, Lismore, Ballyduff, Tallow, and Camphire (with a pair of Marks spotted getting some extra climbing in afterwards). Finally, a third group headed for Lismore with some riders going a bit further. Meanwhile, Pádraig De Búrca, Kevin Forde, Declan Earley and Brendan Power travelled to New Ross for the Barrow Wheelers 100km and had a very enjoyable spin. Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s Kilrush on Saturday and The Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am.

AN POST RÁS 2011 Every year in May the biggest cycling event for racing cyclists in Ireland goes to post, the Rás. For many a year this has been sponsored by FBD insurance, and before that it was known as the milk Rás. For the first time in 7 years we will have some Dungarvan Cycling Club members participating in this feat of endurance and suffering. Enda Donnelly and Damian Travers have decided to take upon themselves to enter and compete in this tough and gruelling event. To give some perspective to it, the Rás takes place over 8 days during the last week in May, in 2010 it averaged 100miles (160 kilometres) a day for the 8 consecutive days. It crossed over 22 categorised climbs, where the pike hill is only classified as a Category 3, the Vee is a Category 1 climb which shall be revisited in 2011. The Rás is made up of Professional teams, some semi-professional teams and then the amateur county teams of which our DCC boys will be part of, they’re not pro’s yet (P.R.O. - bit late now shams). The aim for the county rider is to finish within the allotted time each day, and mix it with the professional riders as much as possible. The training for our 2 wannabe “men of the Rás” is going on in earnest. Some have been training since November for a race that happens in May, one even went to the trouble of buying a mountain bike to train in the snow. Training consist of 6 days out of 7, with a mix of running, cycling, circuits and one brave soul turning his hand to yoga to keep him sound of body and mind (P.R.O. - it'll take more than yoga to cleanse that mind, Lord Buddha himself might have His work cut out). All that remains now is for our trusted cyclists to get the miles in, get the races in, get the speed in the legs, stay fit, stay healthy, don’t crash and don’t get sick. Whilst still working 5 days a week, minding kids and hoping not to be divorced by the cycling widows. As you can guess, entering a team in to the Rás doesn’t come cheap with costs estimated at €10,000 per team. Our riders don’t have a team at time of going to print as a team they were previously sanctioned to ride with has had to withdraw due to unforeseen circumstances, so our riders are on the scout out for a team and shall have to bring financial support with them to any team they participate with. DCC shall be doing some fundraising in the near future and all help and support with these endeavours will be greatly appreciated. We would like to thank Glaxosmithkline, who already sponsor our website ,and also have made a generous donation to our Rás riders. Hopefully in the near future we can get our shy but industrious Rás riders to do a rider profile with photos, training tips and aims for the year and the Rás. So time for our riders to wrestle the gorilla and go hard or go home.

WWAC 10 MILE RACE Well done to the many DCC members who took part in the Dungarvan 10 mile race on Sunday last, posting some good times and illustrating the contribution of cycling to a running regime. Also, many thanks to those members who gave up their time to steward the race. Congrats to WWAC on a successful event which has firmly established itself as one of the must-do events on the Irish athletics calendar.
CYCLING QUOTE “This is not Disneyland, or Hollywood. I'll give you an example: I've read that I flew up the hills and mountains of France. But you don't fly up a hill. You struggle slowly and painfully up a hill, and maybe, if you work very hard, you get to the top ahead of everybody else.” -Lance Armstrong

WEEKEND SPINS It was a mixed bag weatherwise at the weekend. Heavy rain and high winds on Saturday meant that only committed cyclists and unwanted dogs ventured outdoors. Or possibly committed dogs and unwanted cyclists. Either way there were a few hard nuts out and about on Saturday. Chapeau. Yours truly stayed indoors on the rollers watching American Flyers for inspiration; plenty of sweat and one or two tears. Sunday was a different story though with springlike conditions providing perfect cycling weather. There were almost 40 cyclists in The Square and we'd like to extend a warm welcome to the new faces in our peloton. As always there was a range of routes and paces on offer. A lively bunch went to Carrick on Suir and Clonmel. Other riders went to Cappoquin, Lismore, Ballyduff, Tallow & Camphire. Pádraig's group had a good spin to Lismore and back with some hardy souls heading on to Ballyduff and Tallow. Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s Kilrush on Saturday and The Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am.
STEADY GANG If you have been thinking of joining with Dungarvan Cycling club for the Sunday morning Steady Eddie spin, be assured that we will take good care of you, provide plenty good advice, and stretch your fitness level to allow you to meet your cycling potential. All while having lots of fun and chat along the way. So, think no longer, but act on the thought, and arrive at The Square every Sunday for a 9.35am start. Whether you are able for 15k, 30k or 50k, The Square is the place to begin. Ten consecutive weeks will bring a huge improvement to your fitness level, and after that the options are many and varied. Advice and cycling tips will be posted on the club website. Helmet compulsory, water advisable.
WALES 2011 A cycling weekend in west Wales is being organised for the June Bank Holiday 2011. Travelling by Ferry to Fishguard on Friday June 3rd we will be staying in the Fishguard Bay Hotel, returning on Monday afternoon June 6th. The hotel rate is £45 (pounds) per person sharing for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, returning on Monday afternoon (after a final spin, of course!). Once we determine that there is sufficient interest in this, we can work on a schedule for the weekend. Already, discussions on the road have brought forward the idea of having two separate groups wandering around west Wales, similar to our club setup here. Possibilities also of something like a two-hour spin, followed by a long lunch and cycle back to hotel. Anyone who knows good (hard) routes let us know. If you are interested (or your partner!) contact Pádraig de Búrca as soon as possible. A deposit of €50.00 will secure your place. Contact Pádraig in person or by email at wicklow200@hotmail.com before January 30th 2011. We intend booking places for 14, and anyone coming on board after that will be able to contact the hotel directly for availability. Incidentally, this trip is on the weekend before the Wicklow 200, so anyone doing both will be well advised to go to Wales just for minimal cycling and maximum fun. We will ensure also that this weekend will be suitable for anyone who started in to the Steady Eddie group during 2010. Do not be be put off. The weekend will be a fun one, but for more experienced cyclists, extra hard routes including steep gradients will be found.

WEEKEND SPINS First things first: Jean Byrne's dress. Opinions were divided in the DCC peloton as to whether it was haute couture or if she'd come off her bike on the way to the studio. All I'll say on the matter is that after watching said forecast I still didn't know what the weather was going to be like. I don't have that problem with Martin King. As it turned out we had a couple of frosty mornings for cycling at the weekend. We had 8 cyclists out on Saturday morning and the spin took the main road to Castlemartyr and back. Needless to say nobody was complaining about the cold once we were at the top of The Sweep. Despite the cold and frost we still had a good turnout on Sunday morning with spins of varying length and pace as usual. We had riders going to Lismore, Tallow and a few going on to Youghal Bridge while others spent the weekend indulging in their mountain bike habit. Everybody was glad that they'd made the effort to get out though.
Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s Kilrush on Saturday and The Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am.

HERE WE GO AGAIN Happy New Year one and all. “No more champagne and the fireworks are through” they sang. It doesn't sound like Abba brought a lot of cheer to the Stockholm CC New Year's spin but it's a good time to reflect on a fantastic 2010 for the club and look forward to a great 2011. Last year saw numbers up on club spins, more members taking up racing, big club representation at sportives all over the country and plenty of success on the roads. Pádraig's group went from strength to strength and served as a great introduction to new cyclists, many of whom set themselves targets that they subsequently went on to achieve during the year. I'm sure a lot of people would like to thank Pádraig for taking the initiative on this. Dungarvan CC jerseys were prominent on many leisure tours and indeed the club received positive comments for their workrate and solidarity. Club competitions increased in popularity. Many thanks to all those who gave their time to marshal the events and to all of our sponsors. The club open race was extremely well attended on a beautiful day in August. Again, thanks to all who ensured the success of the event. The racing team had a notable year with plenty of victories and places in road races and time trials recorded in 2010 and Brian Hallissey capped off a terrific season with selection for the Irish team. Plenty to look forward to in 2011 then. Lots of goals are being set and there'll be no shortage of support to help you achieve them.
CLUB SPINS The iceman finally wenteth but the thaw brought some pretty gloomy weather which didn't entice too many of us from the Wii and Quality Street over Christmas. However there were small groups out and about most days working off some of the excess. New Year's Day saw a small bunch heading down the coast road to Bonmahon, heading over to Kill and Kilmeaden before coming back on the main road. The crowds were back in abundance in The Square last Sunday though and there was a number of big groups tackling various routes with a range of paces. One bunch headed for Lismore while others took the coast road to Bonmahon with some riders heading on to Tramore, coming back the main road and others going to Kill and Carroll's Cross. Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s Kilrush on Saturday and The Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am.
JOIN THE STEADY GANG Dungarvan Cycling Club provides several options for members and intending Members. For anyone beginning the sport just come along to the Square on Sunday mornings for a 9.35am start. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early for advice and tips. Bring a helmet and water. You will be advised on a suitable distance to begin with and later a personalised fitness programme will be available to you. Our group (cycling at a steady 25kmph / 15 mph) generally goes to Cappoquin and Lismore. You may be ready for this journey, or perhaps just half way...we provide options for approx. 15k, 30k and 50k. Other more regular members go on beyond Lismore, completing up to 80k before lunch. Quote from member who started in February 2010: "I was advised that if I stuck to the plan, I would be able to cycle the Ring of Kerry in July. I did, and I did! It was for me a huge achievement, as I managed only 10 miles the first day." Helmet compulsory, water advisable.
