SUPER WINS FOR BRIAN HALLISSEY AND MAURICE HICKEY

It was another successful week on the roads for DCC as Maurice and Brian maintained their recent good form to record notable victories.

MUNSTER TT CHAMPIONSHIPS – GOLD FOR MAURICE

Last Thursday night, 24 hours after retaining his club TT title, Maurice Hickey travelled to Co. Limerick for the Munster TT championships. In very wet conditions, Maurice covered the 11.5 miles in 25:12 to take gold in the A3 category and record the 5th fastest time of the night overall. Well done Maurice.

EDDIE TOBIN GP – VICTORY FOR BRIAN IN BUNCLODYBrian_winsWexford

4 riders made the trip to Bunclody, Co. Wexford last Sunday for the Eddie Tobin GP and Brian Hallissey produced another top drawer performance to take a win and propel himself towards the A2 category.

The circuit was a rolling 26kms, on a very good surface with a long 4km drag followed by a steep 500m hill to the finish.

Damian Travers was first away in the A1/A2 race, over 4 laps of the circuit and it was tough going. The winning break went away early and stayed away; Damian finishing with the main bunch.

Next off were Ray Dwyer and Brian Hallissey in the 3 lap A3 race. On the climb at the end of the first lap they both got into a 7 man break and worked hard to stay away. At the start of the third lap they were joined by another 4 riders and the winner was going to come from this group. With a couple of kms to go Brian and another rider rode off the front, the rest of the group didn't respond and Brian proved the stronger on the finishing hill to take the win with Ray coming home in 4th to get amongst the prizes too.

Sean Dwyer was the sole DCC entrant in the A4 race, covering 2 laps. There was an early break by 2 riders from Orwell and Wexford. Sean made a couple of appearances at the front to try and chase but found both the bunch and his legs unwilling to cooperate. A strong Wexford and Orwell presence allowed the break to stay away and take the spoils. As the bunch started to disintegrate on the final climb Sean managed to grind his way up the hill and squeeze into the top 10.

WEEKEND SPINS

A big group took advantage of the fine weather last Saturday morning and went to Cappoquin, Lismore, Ballyduff, Fermoy and Tallow before returning home by Lismore and Cappoquin.

The miserable weather on Sunday morning didn't deter a large number of hardy cyclists from getting out and going to Cappoquin, Villierstown, Aglish, Clashmore and home.

Join us every weekend, Saturday, 9.30am from John Foley's garage and from The Square, 9.30am Sunday.

BEGINNERS GROUP

Just because most of our group have moved on to a longer distance, this will not mean that we will not cater for newcomers. We provide 3 options every week: a short 6 mile spin, a 15 mile route and a 30 mile route. (10k, 25k and 50k) The first is Carriglea, the second is Whitechurch and the target for this beginner group is to be able to cycle to Lismore and back. We are determined to provide a spin suitable to the pace of each newcomer, and are confident that anyone who commits to 10 consecutive weeks of cycling at a suitable pace will be able to complete these target distances above. Some newcomer cyclists will be able to do so much sooner. Just come along to the Square on Sundays for a 9.35 start. Helmet compulsory. We will be happy to help you get started.

N.B. If anyone can assist with the Beginners spins please contact Padraig.

SUPER PERFORMANCE BY BRIAN HALLISSEY IN JUNIOR TOUR OF IRELAND

Brian Hallissey, riding for the Irish Development squad secured a fantastic 16th place overall in the Junior Tour of Ireland, held last week in Mayo. In a tough 6 stage race, dominated by some strong foreign squads Brian rode consistently well each day and was active throughout the race, finishing as the 1st Development rider on GC. We hope to have a fuller account of Brian's week in next week's notes.

BRONZE FOR MAURICE IN ALL IRELAND HILL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Maurice Hickey spent the weekend racing in Kerry and was rewarded for his efforts with a brilliant bronze medal in the A3 category at the Irish Hill Championships last Saturday in Tralee. A difficult climb, combined with driving rain and a head wind made for a very tough event, making his performance all the more impressive.

Maurice hung around in Kerry for the Kingdom Bar classic, hosted by Killorglin CC last Sunday. He got up the road in a couple of early breaks but when a break went away with Blarney, St. Finbarr's and Tralee riders the group stopped chasing and any moves were closed down. Maurice finished in the main bunch.

WEEKEND SPINS

John Eagleton's face gave it away last week – here we go again with the now familiar July weather patterns. Jean Byrne might have made it more bearable. Saturday was a washout but there were still a few DCC riders braving the elements. Sunday was a much better day and there were large numbers to take advantage of it. Various routes were covered, ranging from Lismore and back to the Carrick, Clonmel circuit.

Join us every weekend, Saturday, 9.30am from John Foley's garage and from The Square, 9.30am Sunday.

Monday 5th July
RACING TEAM UPDATE
Maurice Hickey was the club's sole representative on the roads this weekend, taking
part in Blarney's weekend of racing. A very fast crit on Saturday night saw a break of
4 get away at the start. This break contained 2 Blarney and 2 St Finbarr's riders and
stayed away for the duration with Blarney controlling the race after that. Blarney's
Brendan Mcloughlin took the win in a 2 up sprint with Russell Treacy. Maurice
finished in the main bunch, in the top 20.
Maurice was back for more on Sunday in the combined A2/A3 race. This was a tough
race, 7 laps of a circuit with a tough climb in the middle. On the 4th lap the decisive
break got away on the climb and the race was again won by Blarney's Brendan
McLoughlin with Maurice finishing in the main bunch.

NATIONAL CHAMPS
Brian Hallissey had a great performance in the National Championships the weekend
before last in Sligo, on a mostly dry but windy day. Brian took part in the Junior race
which started just after the Seniors. The Juniors had 7 laps of the fairly draggy 9 mile
course with one sharp 400m climb followed by 3 miles with a headwind along the
main road into the finish. The race began very slowly with a lot of riders watching
each other rather than trying to get away themselves. Once over the climb for the
first time, Brian drifted off the front was and was soon joined by 3 other riders. They
worked very well together into the headwind and built up a lead of around 2 minutes
with a disorganised bunch behind them. However, two of these riders were dropped
out of the break leaving Brian and one other rider out on their own for the remaining
5 laps. They still managed to work well together and kept the gap at a reasonable 1
and a half minutes for several laps. On the penultimate lap however, a chase group of
6 rode away from the main bunch and began to close the gap to the two riders up the
road. Once they began to work well together they always had the advantage and they
caught the two leaders just after the start of the last lap. After this the pace dropped
considerably and despite several attacks the group stayed together coming over the
climb. Knowing he doesn't have the greatest of kicks Brian tried to get away a few
times along the main road but heavy legs and a head wind kept things together for the
final sprint. A brilliant sprint from Antrim first year junior Jack Wilson gave him the
win with Brian coming in 7th and his breakaway companion Ewen MacDonald taking
an excellent 3rd. Roll on the Junior Tour!!

BRIAN IN JUNIOR TOUR
After his great show in the National Championships Brian Hallissey has been
rewarded with a selection in the Irish Development squad for the Junior Tour of
Ireland which started Tuesday (6th) in Mayo. The club wishes him all the best.

RING OF KERRY
The club had a huge representation at the Ring of Kerry charity cycle at the weekend.
There were a reported 6,000 cyclists taking part in all and it was as well organised as
ever. As usual there was plenty of food and great support along the route. The Kerry
Rose handed out sweets and the weather stayed dry. A dog in Waterville might have
a permanent tattoo of Pat Walsh's tyre on his fur to remember the occasion though.
Both dog and Pat are ok, in fact it might have been the same dog that turned up in
the Tour 24 hours later causing further carnage. Honourable mention must go to John
Flynn who single handedly kept up the tradition of club members cycling to Killarney
the day before – not much fun on your own into a head wind. Good work skin.

WEEKEND SPINS
DCC Notes 4/7/2010
Those that didn't make it to the Ring of Kerry enjoyed good spins at the weekend.
Saturday's spin went to Old Parish, Ardmore, Youghal, Knockanore, Cappoquin and
home. All roads led to Lismore on a windy Sunday with some riders returning home
and others completing yesterday's circuit in the opposite direction – Knockanore,
Youghal, Ardmore and Old Parish.
Join us every weekend, Saturday, 9.30am from John Foley's garage and from The
Square, 9.30am Sunday.

BEGINNERS GROUP

short 6 mile spin, a 15 mile route and a 30 mile route. (10k, 25k and 50k) The first

distances above. Some newcomer cyclists will be able to do so much sooner. Just

WEEK 9:
Hugh Mulhearne secured overall victory in week 9 with a comprehensive win.
It was another great turnout, the rain stayed away and racing got underway shortly
after 7pm. Only Hugh, Rory Wyley and Brian Hallissey could manage to bridge the
gap to the leading group on the road, and after successfully doing this Hugh continued
to ride strongly and pulled away in the closing 200 metres. Hugh was followed
over the line by Eddie Keogh and in third place Brian Hallissey. So congratulations
to Hugh who is the overall winner but all other places are up for grabs tonight
(Wednesday 7th) which should make for some exciting final night racing. Hugh joins
some very illustrious names on the trophy.
Week 9 RESULTS:

1st: Hugh Mulhearne (DMCC)

2nd: Eddie Keogh (U/A)
3rd: Brian Hallissey (DCC)

THREE TOP TEN PLACES IN COBH

5 club members made the short trip to Cobh for Ballymore CC's Leahy cup last Sunday on a perfect day for racing. The course was a tough, undulating 10km circuit with a couple of nasty climbs. The A2/A3 race was handicapped, over 7 laps of the circuit, with Ray Dwyer, Brian Hallissey and Maurice Hickey away first with the A3s. The group worked well and held off the A2s until the end of the fourth lap. At that point 2 riders broke clear and with the bunch not prepared to chase they stayed away. The last lap switched the riders to a 1.2km climb to the finish and the 3 lads rode very strong and all finished in the top 10, Brian in 5th and Maurice and Ray just outside the prizes in 9th and 10th. Great performances from the lads - Brian getting another couple of points closer to an A2 upgrade.

Rory Moloney and Eamon Phelan lined out for the A4 race, covering 5 laps of the same circuit. The course was proving very tough and Rory was unlucky to find himself in the wrong position as the bunch started to split up. Eamon showed his usual doggedness and rode a good race, finishing just outside the top 10.

WEEKEND SPINS

Fantastic weather again last weekend ensured massive numbers for the weekend club spins. It's great to see so many people discovering that there are few better ways to spend a Sunday morning than spinning around our glorious little county and into our neighbouring counties on a bike. On a sunny morning there isn't a finer sight in the land than the approach to Lismore and there isn't a better way to experience it than on a bike in the company of a couple of dozen companeros.

Saturday's spin brought riders to Cappoquin and Lismore before climbing The Vee, then on to Clogheen, Newcastle and Ballymacarbry with some members going over The Maumau before heading home.

Sunday saw the usual large crowd assembled in The Square with a number of spins on offer. A large bunch went to Cappoquin, Lismore, Tallow, Youghal, Ardmore and Old Parish and another big group went to Lismore and over The Vee with some riders coming home via The Cats and Cappoquin and others going on to Clogheen and Ballymacarbry.

For anyone interested in a longer spin to prepare for the Ring of Kerry there will be a spin leaving John Foley's at 8:30 on Saturday, otherwise join us every weekend, Saturday, 9.30am from John Foley's garage and from The Square, 9.30am Sunday.

SPORTIVES

Well done to Padraig De Burca, Kevin Forde and John Coffey who completed the Wicklow 200 recently. Maurice Fennell was taking part in the An Post Tour De Burren last weekend. By all accounts this was a well organised event and the food was exceptional. Speaking of food the Ring of Kerry takes place on Saturday July 3rd and your training should be in full swing by now; I'm currently up to 6 slices of brack a day and a couple of ham sandwiches.

SUMMER SERIES 2010 - SPONSORED BY TONY O'MAHONY CYCLES

WEEK 7:

25 signed on last Wednesday, the weather was perfect for racing - warm and very little wind! Tonight the semi-scratch was determined to not get caught and cycled well together to take advantage of their time gap over the scratch. After reaching the Master McGrath the semi scratch realised they were not going to be caught and with the limit just ahead Cian Dwyer was first to attack. Shortly after the petrol station Jason Collins jumped and Michael Keane and Liam Pollard went with him. They rode well up the hill, Michael taking 1st, Liam 2nd and Jason 3rd. Remember it's your best 7 results count to the overall.

RESULTS:

1st: Michael Keane (DCC)

2nd: Liam Pollard (Clonmel CC)

3rd: Jason Collins (Youghal CC)

4th: Keith Kenneally (DCC)

5th: Emma Walsh (DCC)

6th: Jason Travers (DCC)

7th: Eamon Phelan (DCC)

Monday 14th June

MORE GREAT RESULTS FOR DCC

The club enjoyed more success on the road over the last 2 weekends.

LIMERICK

Broadford hosted the Cycling Pursuits 3 day stage race over the bank holiday weekend. There were 4 stages but as the general classification was based on points riders didn't have to contest every stage.

In stage 1 Brian Hallissey was in the A1/A2/A3 race and Ray Dwyer was in the A4 race with Ray producing a good performance to finish 3rd.

The 2 lads skipped the early morning time trial on Sunday but contested the road stage in the afternoon. This was a number of laps with points scored at the end of each lap. Ray scored consistently and despite a minor mechanical finished 3rd on the stage. Eamon Phelan also raced this stage and did very well to finish 6th in the final sprint. I'm predicting a bright future for this young man.

The final stage on Monday took in a hard climb, the 1,100 feet of Mass Rock. This was right up Brian's street and despite the wintry conditions he didn't disappoint. The A1/A2/A3s had to climb it 3 times. After the first ascent Brian was in a lead group of 7. Second time around this was down to 3 and after the last time over it was down to 2 with Brian going on to take the stage victory. A fantastic and well deserved result for him that also ensured he finished 6th overall. The race was won by Comeragh's Robin Kelly. Meanwhile back in the A4 race, despite a puncture, Ray did enough to secure 3rd place overall. This was a great result for Ray and secured his upgrade to the A3 category after a brief but notorious stint in A4.

BRAY

Last Saturday Damian Travers took part in the Christy McManus Memorial Race in Wicklow. This was a handicap race with A4s off first followed by A3s and lastly A2s. The A4 bunch was caught early on by the A3s but Damian found the A2 group unwilling to work hard enough to catch the groups up ahead and the race was won by Blarney's Damian Barry.

CURROW

On Sunday 5 club members made the long trip to Currow, Co.Kerry for the Drumm cup. In the A3 race we had Brian Hallissey, Maurice Hickey and Ray Dwyer racing 4 laps of a relatively flat 15km circuit. Ray and Maurice tried to get away in a few unsuccessful early breaks however Brian found himself in what turned out to be the winning breakaway. He worked hard in keeping them away and eventually finished 3rd behind Blarney's Edward Barry and Youghal's Eoin Whyte. Ray and Maurice rode well and came in at the front of the bunch in 9th and 10th.

Emma Walsh and Sean Dwyer lined out in the A4 race over 3 laps of the same circuit. The strong cross winds made it very difficult for breaks to stay away in this race and it came down to a bunch sprint which Sean and Emma didn't contest (in the interests of self preservation you understand).

So the results keep coming for Dungarvan CC with a lot more to come hopefully.

WEEKEND SPINS

Good weather ensured large numbers on the roads again at the weekend. On Saturday a big group went around the Carrick-Clonmel circuit with a couple of lads cutting across to Rathgormack and Ballymacarbry via Powers the Pot.

On Sunday a group went to Cappoquin, Lismore, Ballyduff and Tallow with some riders choosing to go on to Youghal before returning home.

For anyone interested in a longer spin to prepare for the Ring of Kerry there will be a spin leaving John Foley's at 8:30 on Saturday, otherwise join us every weekend, Saturday, 9.30am from John Foley's garage and from The Square, 9.30am Sunday.

SUMMER SERIES 2010 - SPONSORED BY TONY O'MAHONY CYCLES

WEEK 6:

We had smaller numbers last week but the racing was still as hard if not harder than usual!! A strong scratch group cycled very strong and after missing out on points last week made sure not to miss out this week. Hugh Mulhearne and Damian Travers broke away with Hugh soloing to victory. Hugh now leads the table on 42pts with Ray Dwyer in 2nd on 38pts and joint 3rd Damian Travers and Enda Donnelly on 33pts.Remember it's your best 7 results count to the overall.

RESULTS:

1st: Hugh Mulhearne (DMCC)

2nd: Damian Travers (DCC)

3rd: Mark Power (DMCC)

4th: Pat Kenneally (DMCC)

5th: Ray Dwyer (DCC)

6th: Enda Donnelly (DCC)

7th: Rory Wyley (DMCC)

KILLARNEY TRIATHLON

Club members' success wasn't just confined to road racing last weekend. Siobhan Dunphy and Michael Moloney took part in the Killarney triathlon last Saturday with Siobhan finishing 1st lady, a tremendous result. Well done Siobhan. Michael had a good race, finishing just outside the places.

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED

National Bike Week is taking place from 13th June - 20th June. Waterford Sports Partnership are running various events (Bike Skills, Maintenance etc) on Saturday 19th from 1 - 4pm. If available please contact Enda Donnelly for further details.

Monday 30th May

GREAT RESULTS IN WEXFORD

The club had 12 members signing on for racing in Camross. This was a fantastic turnout for the club and we were rewarded with some brilliant results.

First away were Damian Travers and Enda Donnelly in the A2 race. This was a 100km race, 4 laps of a 25km circuit which was tight and technical in parts and a long open stretch on the main road. Damian got into a break of 6 on the first lap which worked hard and stayed away for the rest of the race with Damian taking 4th at the finish and Enda finishing comfortably in the bunch.

Next off were Brian Hallissey and Maurice Hickey in the A3 race, also over 4 laps. Maurice and Brian were involved in a number of early breaks but nothing was sticking. At the start of the last lap 2 riders broke away and Brian got into a chase group. With a few kms to go some of the group stopped working but Brian and others kept riding and caught the breakaway on the line with Brian claiming 6th place and his first points; a great result for him. Maurice finished well up in the bunch.

We had 8 riders in the A4 race, a 75km race over 3 laps of the circuit. Ray Dwyer, Keith Walsh, Rory Moloney, Anthony Dwyer, Emma Walsh, Eamon Phelan, Colin Organ and Sean Dwyer all took to the line. As per the usual script Ray and Keith were attacking from the gun but nothing was getting away. Rory got into a break of 3 on the 2nd lap but this too was brought back. With the bunch all together on the last lap DCC tried to use their numerical advantage to control the race from the front and it almost paid off. With a couple of kms to go the jostling for positions started and Sean was brought down. However, as the race wound up to the sprint finish Ray made his move. He probably ended up following the wrong wheel but still got up to finish 3rd, his 4th top 3 from 5 starts. To cap a good afternoon for the club Emma took the prize for 1st lady. It was great to see a fine display of team riding from the club. Thanks to our friends in Comeragh and Sportif Waterford for helping to patch up your scribe afterwards. It's great to see so many members racing and the results starting to come.

WEEKEND SPINS

Last weekend's weather, while maybe not worthy of an Undertones quote, was still good enough to tempt large numbers on to the roads for club spins. Saturday's spin  took in Cappoquin, Lismore, Deerpark, Knockanore, Youghal, Ardmore and Old Parish. There was a rustle around the boreens and a song on every throat. Happy now Colin?

As usual on Sundays there were a number of options. One group went to Ballymac, Newcastle and Clogheen and over the Vee.

Last Sunday's 25kmph group was the biggest of the season as we had 18 cyclists leaving the Square, heading to Lismore, at a pace that allowed for plenty of chat. Some returned home from Lismore while others tackled the 7-mile climb to the Vee, and yet another group went on to Tallow and home by Camphire Bridge and the Blackwater. Once again as in previous weeks, faster riders split from this group and moved on ahead on the return to Dungarvan at a faster pace. This group is now made up of a very good mix of newcomers and experienced cyclists and plenty of advice and encouragement is being given out. Why not come along with us? You can decide how far you want to go, and then simply tell someone in the group that you intend turning for home. Generally speaking, we will try to head west to Lismore as the route is reasonably flat, but most importantly we are doing our best to keep the pace right at about 25kmph (15mph) Please note, however, that this club spin is confined to those over 16 years. Also, anyone who has been with us on a regular basis, should take out club membership, if you have not already done so. Forms can be downloaded from the Cycling Ireland website or are available also at Ger Wyley Sports.

In the coming weeks, we will encourage cyclists to nominate cycling routes, so if you have a favourite, say so when we assemble in the Square. Tip for this week: when you are at the front of the group, both cyclists should cycle beside one another, wheel to wheel.

WEEK 4:

Another great night for racing saw 39 people sign on. It is great to see some new faces every week. Remember that 7 out of the 10 races go toward your final score. Hugh Mulhearne won tonight followed by a well fought sprint with Martin Cullinane taking second place, Damian third  and Ray in fourth. Ray now leads with 28pts, with Hugh in second place on 27pts. Thanks to Frank and to Richie and Mark for marshalling and driving lead cars.

RESULTS: 1st: Hugh Mulhearne (DMCC), 2nd: Martin Cullinane (CCC), 3rd: Damian Travers (DCC), 4th: Ray Dwyer (DCC), 5th: Brian Hallissey (DCC), 6th: John Horgan (BCC), 7th: Mark Power (DMCC)

WEEKEND SPINS

“The summer's really here and it's time to come out, time to discover what fun is about. Here comes the summer.” I don't know if The Undertones ever cycled the coast road in May sunshine but they certainly hit the nail on the head. What a beautiful weekend for cycling; no more overshoes or base layers - shorts, jersey, helmet, shades and off out the road. Although from experience I can say that sun cream was probably necessary too. Saturday's spin went down the coast road to Tramore and back. Sunday saw the usual large crowd assemble in The Square with a number of spins on offer. One group headed to Bonmahon, Kill and Portlaw before climbing Scrouty and coming back the Carrick road. A second group headed to Bonmahon, Kill, Kilmac, Mahonbridge and Kilrossanty before going over the Mámá and home.

Our steady group cycled to Lismore and Ballyduff in magnificent sunshine on Sunday last, and by all accounts were glad of a cool breeze on the way home. It is our aim to keep the pace of this group at approximately 25kmph and this is exactly what we did on the day. By agreement with those in the group, anyone who wanted to push a bit harder for the last section from Affane to Dungarvan were free to do so, and some took this option, while the remainder stayed with the steadier pace. Once again we had new faces in the group and they completed the route comfortably.

Join us every weekend, Saturday, 9.30am from John Foley's garage and from The Square, 9.30am Sunday.

WEEK 3:

We had 37 riders sign on last Wednesday night for week 3 which included some new faces to the league. 4 groups were put together by Frank 'commissaire' Browne. 3 of the groups had come together by Millstreet, however the limit group were working well together and stayed away with Paudie Halpin powering up Ballinamuck for the win. Thanks to Frank as well as Richie and Davy for driving lead cars.

RESULTS:

1st: Paudie Halpin, 2nd: Cathal Gannon, 3rd: Maurice Fennell, 4th: Ross Lavery, 5th: Martin Veale, 6th: Martin Hayes, 7th: Michael Hearne

WATERFORD ADVENTURE RACE

Well done to all the club members who took part in the gruelling Waterford Adventure Race last Saturday. Congratulations to Damian Travers and Siobhan Dunphy, both of whom came third in the men's and women's races respectively. Thanks to the club members who assisted in marshalling on the day. It was a very successful event by all accounts, well done to Tony and Joe.

FBD RÁS 2010

Anyone wanting to catch some of this year's Rás should note that Thursday 27th's stage will be passing through Lismore, Cappoquin, The Pike and Lemybrien before finishing on Seskin Hill.

RACING UPDATE: 1-2 FOR THE BOYS IN BLUE

It was another successful weekend for the club on the roads with Keith Walsh and Ray Dwyer taking first and second in the A4 race at the St Finbarrs CC meeting in Whitechurch, Co. Cork last Sunday.

The club had 6 entrants in the A4 race. Lining up alongside Keith and Ray were Anthony Dwyer, Sean Dwyer, John Flynn and Eamon Phelan. The race was 5 laps of an 11k circuit with a long downhill stretch followed by a long drag into a strong headwind. Ray and Keith were very active trying to get away in the early laps and Sean managed a brief trip up the road at one point but nothing was sticking. However at the start of lap 4 Keith and Ray got into a break with 2 other riders. They worked well together for the remainder of the race holding off the chasing pack being driven on by Fermoy and Blarney. With a kilometre to go the break were not going to get caught and it was Keith who made the first move about 400 metres out. The other 2 riders couldn't match him and he rode on to take the victory with Ray coming round the others to take second and ensure a fantastic result for Dungarvan CC. The other lads finished well up in the bunch with Anthony setting the cat amongst the pigeons by starting the sprint for the minor places about a kilometre out. Well done to Eamon on his race debut and John on his return to racing.

Brian Hallissey, Maurice Hickey and Enda Donnelly lined up for the A2/A3 combined race. This was to be 7 laps giving 77kms. Enda was away for a lap and a bit early in the race, but with only two riders in this move it was doomed on what was a windy day. Brian and Maurice were also in moves, but they too were brought back. The break of the day (including local man Rory Wyley) went on lap 3 and nothing got away after that. The race was won by West Clare's Jarlath Hassett with Rory second.

Another local rider, Cian Dwyer, had a good result getting third in the u-16 race.

Join us every weekend, Saturday, 9.30am from John Foley's garage and from The Square, 9.30am Sunday.

STEADY GROUP EXTEND DISTANCE

Our steady group have been increasing their mileage of late. All members of this group are now cycling very well and have improved their fitness levels considerably in recent weeks.

This group is composed of cyclists who started in the autumn or just after the new year, and they are now enjoying the benefits of the consistent cycling they have done since then. Some have set themselves a target to cycle the Ring of Kerry in Killarney in July, and the Sean Kelly 100k in August. These goals are realistic and very achievable for consistent group cyclists.

RACING UPDATE

Wexford Cycling A4 race:

Last Saturday evening Ray and Sean Dwyer made the trip to Inch, Co.Wexford for the Wexford Cycling A4 race.

The course was on a stretch of the old Dublin road between 2 roundabouts at Arklow and Gorey, 4 laps of 16km each. Strong winds were going to make attacking difficult but that didn't stop Ray trying early. At the end of the second lap he got clear in a 2 man break, which quickly became a 1 man break. With a strong tailwind in one direction Ray built up a 30 second lead but as soon he turned back into the wind at the bottom of the course it was going to be hard and he was caught just after the start of the last lap. After that the bunch started to get twitchy and sure enough there was a crash about 2km out which Ray got caught behind. This left the club's reputation resting in Sean's sprinting legs. Anyone who's still reading on at this point has obviously never seen him limp over the line on Wednesday nights. With about 500m to go 2 Comeragh riders broke away and hung on to take the honours with Sean coming in with the bunch.

Midleton Crit:

As part of the Tour De Cure weekend Midleton CC held a crit in the town centre last Sunday over a short, tight circuit. Ray Dwyer, Sean Dwyer and Keith Walsh signed on for the A4 race which was scheduled for 40 minutes + 3 laps. Keith and Ray put the hammer down early and after 7 or 8 laps had moved clear in a group of 4.
Sean found himself back in the second group finding the intense pace very tough. Halfway through a Comeragh rider broke away from the lead group. Once he had lapped the second group they were instructed to pull over but this went largely unheeded and allowed him a bit of shelter (through no fault of his own) before being caught by the chasing Ray. Some confusion at the end about the number of laps remaining left Ray letting the Comeragh rider sprint for the line on what turned out to be the last lap. Keith kept up a good day for DCC coming in 3rd after a strong ride with Sean ruing his naivete in letting his group go with the leader after they were caught.

Brian Hallissey, Maurice Hickey and Damian Travers were in the A2/A3 race. A very quick opening few laps proved too much for a struggling Damian and he pulled up. As the race went on the numbers started to dwindle but Maurice and Brian remained active in the bunch and chasing down the many breakaways. With a lap to go the bunch was all together but on the last lap Kanturk's Willie Curtin just edged ahead to take the honours. Maurice capped off a good performance getting up for 8th. Great weather and closed roads made for an enjoyable, if tough, day's racing. More photos here

WEEKEND SPORTIVES

A very large contingent of club members made their way to Midleton early on Saturday morning to join 1,200 other cyclists in the Stephen Roche Tour De Cure. Distances of 50, 100 & 160kms were on offer and by all accounts a great day's cycling was had by all.

Also last weekend Maurice Fennell travelled to the An Post Sean Kelly Tour of Sligo. Maurice is hoping to complete all 5 tours in the An Post series this summer and is putting in plenty miles on the roads.

Our league races will be starting tonight (Wednesday), May 5th at 7.00pm sharp with sign on from 6.45pm at the lay by approximately 1 mile up the Clonmel road after the Master McGrath monument. The series will run for 10 weeks with a rider's best 7 scores counting to their overall result. The route is again over the Millstreet circuit with the finish in Ballinamuck. Benny Flynn is the defending champion and doesn't think Mark Cavendish is a suitable role model any more and has been looking at old videos of Mario Cipollini. Thanks to Frank Browne who once again has volunteered to look after proceedings. To take part in this competition it is essential that you hold a ‘club competition’ license, please bring it with you to the sign-on. There is a €2 sign-on fee to club members and €4 to non-members.

With the popularity of cycling increasing, we have no doubt that our races will see record numbers sign-on. To make this a safe event for everyone we will be requiring marshals and drivers to lead the groups around the circuit. If anyone can help us out over the series please contact Emma Walsh or any committee member.

RACING TEAM

Dungarvan CC sent a 5 man team to the Corkman 3 day stage race in Kanturk last weekend. The team was Damian Travers, Enda Donnelly, Maurice Hickey, Ray Dwyer and Brian Hallissey. I hope to have some details of how the lads fared in next week's notes.

RAY SHINES THROUGH THE RAIN IN FERMOY

He signalled his intentions with a blistering time in the Liam Rossiter on Wednesday night and last Sunday Ray Dwyer turned up for his first race of the season and rode away from the rest of the A4 field to record a brilliant win at the Silver Pail GP in Fermoy. The A4 race was over 3 laps of a 20km circuit. Ray was attacking from the gun and on the first lap got away with 2 others. By the start of the last lap it was down to Ray and Comeragh's Michael McGrath. Both worked very hard together to stay away, made all the more difficult by the wind and downpours of hail. With neither the Dungarvan or Comeragh contingent contributing to the chase effort in the bunch it was set for a sprint finish between the 2 with Ray proving the stronger over the last 200 metres to take the win. We also had Keith Walsh, Anthony Dwyer, Sean Dwyer and debutant Colin Organ lining out. Keith was involved in a couple of early moves but unfortunately punctured at the end of the first lap. Anthony, Sean and Colin finished comfortably in the bunch. It was a double celebration for the Dwyers with Ray's nephew Cian winning the Under 16 race for Dan Morrissey Carrick Wheelers. Brian Hallissey was our representative in the A3 race, 4 laps of the same circuit. In a fairly uneventful race Brian tried to get in a few breaks but nothing was sticking and the race went down to a bunch finish won by Barrow Wheelers' Hugh Byrne. Damian Travers went off in the A1/A2 race over 5 laps. The circuit was a draggy lap with no real climbs so his hopes were high. As usual the race got going right from the gun (once the lead car gave them a chance). Attacks were coming thick and fast and Damian was active in both the trying to get away and chasing down, but as the fishing adage says "the one that got away" was the one he had no part in. The break went towards the end of lap 1 and stayed away to the finish. Damian rode strong throughout with the Dan Morrissey and Edge teams rolling through on the front to ensure that at least a good days training was had. Keith Gater Comeragh CC won the overall and Damian tried to finish with a flourish but after riding hard all day the tank was empty. Roll on the Corkman 3 day next weekend where there shall be a full Dungarvan CC team.

LIAM ROSSITER PYT:

Believe it or not, once again the art of predicting time reached a new level. Maurice Hickey, cycling his 'Team Telekom' Time Trial bike crossed the line in exactly 36.32 (his predicted time). This was also one of the fastest on the night. Hugh Mulhearne finished in 35.09 which was the fastest on the night. 4 weeks into the competition, regular competitors have seen their times improving each week with plenty of sub 40mins. This should make for some interesting racing in the upcoming league. Thanks to Liam and all his helpers for looking after proceedings.

Week 4 had 26 people sign-on, lets hope we can have record numbers turn up for the final week, sign on 6.30, John Foley's Garage.

WEEKEND SPINS

Aside from the normal weekend spins we had club members attending a couple of sportives last weekend. On Saturday morning Damian Travers, Emma Walsh, Keith Walsh and Sean Dwyer rode to Waterford to join Comeragh CC's Copper Coast sportive which was 100km up the coast road to Dungarvan and back to Waterford by the main road. As the lads had already completed the Dungarvan=Waterford piece they availed of the cake and sandwiches at the food stop in the burgery and went home.

On Sunday Mark Power, Vincent Feeney, Richie Power, John Coffey, Frank Browne, Eamonn O'Doherty, Kevin O'Sullivan and Maurice Fennell travelled to Kilmallock, Co. Limerick to take part in the hub challenge. It was a well organised event with 4 “nice” climbs early on, a lively run in to the finish and plenty of good grub.

Congrats to both Comeragh and Kilmallock clubs on their successful events.

There were plenty of riders on the roads locally as well, including a Saturday spin that turned out to be a bit more epic than was intended. It looks like we'll have to increase the order for the sat navs Mark.

Join us every weekend, Saturday, 9.30am from John Foley's garage and from The Square, 9.30am Sunday.

STEADY GROUP EXTEND DISTANCE

Last Sunday, our steady 15mph (25kmph) group completed a longer distance than usual. They cycled at a very steady pace to Lismore and went on to Tallow and turned left to Camphire Bridge and home by Cappoquin. All members of this group are now cycling very well and have improved their fitness levels considerably in recent weeks. Whereas we had Lismore as our target distance up until Easter, this group has extended the distance to 40 miles (60k) in recent weeks and were happy to try out 50 miles today (80k) All completed the route comfortably. Also, on our return to Affane, it was decided to split the group as some wanted to finish the spin at a faster pace. That's what we call progress! Well done to everyone.

This group is composed of cyclists who started in the autumn or just after the new year, and they are now enjoying the benefits of the consistent cycling they have done since then. Newcomer Kevin O'Sullivan closest on week 3.

Week 3 had a fantastic 30 people sign-on to test themselves against the clock! The sun came out and with the wind a bit more favourable to cyclists, some fast times were recorded. Thanks to Liam and Ray for timekeeping.

WEEKEND SPINS

As the fine weather continued there was big turnouts for club spins again last weekend.

Saturday's spin was a long one taking in Cappoquin, Lismore, Ballysaggart, Araglin, Fermoy and Ballyduff. Sunday saw more than 40 cyclists assembled in The Square.  Resisting the temptations of the food festival they headed down the coast road to Bonmahon with some riders going across to Kill and others going to Fenor before coming home on the main road.

Join us every weekend, Saturday, 9.30am from John Foley's garage and from The Square, 9.30am Sunday.

BEGINNERS WELCOME

Each week we are welcoming new faces to the Beginners' group. Some of our regular participants have moved on in leaps and bounds from our 6 mile spin to the regular Whitechurch 15 mile (25k) route. The pace of the short 6 mile spin is usually set at around 11 or 12 mph, but is always suited to whoever is in the group. A little slower or faster? Not a problem. We promise you will enjoy the spin and hopefully come back for more. As soon as a basic fitness is built up we will advise participants to complete 2 laps of this six-mile circuit, and then it is only a short jump again to complete the Whitechurch route. The final option at present is the longer trip to Lismore and beyond. Riders in this group have been very consistently present for the past number of weeks and are now enjoying a dramatically increased level of fitness.

RACING – Carrick, Tommy Sheehan Memorial

4 members made the short trip to Carrick on Suir for the Tommy Sheehan Memorial race last Sunday. Brian Hallissey and Maurice Hickey lined out for the A3 race which was over 3 laps of the tough Kearney's lane circuit. Both lads were very active in the bunch throughout the race but it all came together at the end with Comeragh's Thomas Lavery just holding off Conor O'Shea of Killorglin. Anthony and Sean Dwyer took part in the A4 race which was 2 laps of the same circuit. With the bunch still together on the second lap Sean took it upon himself to try and blow the race open at the start of the climb. However by the top the only real damage he had done was to himself. With a fairly large group still together Anthony had a go off the front just before Sky hill but no-one was being allowed to escape and a bunch finish was inevitable. Sean rediscovered his legs slightly too late but managed to get a top 10 finish with Anthony just behind proving that a hard run in the Marine Climb on Friday night had taken nothing out of his legs. We must also mention a third Dwyer, Cian, who made his debut in the U-16 race in the colours of Dan Morrissey and got 4th place. Good stuff.

WEEK 2 LIAM ROSSITER PYT
- Colin & Jason spot on!

Week 2 saw an increase in people signing-on to take on the clock, 24 in total!

It is very unusual to have one rider predict their time to the exact second, never mind two, which was the case this week when Colin Organ finished in 44.00mins and Jason clocked in at 42.00mins. Well done to both.

Thanks to Liam and Justin for time keeping. Sign on this week is at 6:30 with the first rider off at 6:45.

DES HANLON MEMORIAL – CARLOW

Keith_WalshDungarvan CC was represented in all categories. In the A4 race we had Keith Walsh and Rory Moloney; this was a one lap race covering 62k of very challenging terrain, with plenty of splits in the hills Keith escaped with the winning bunch finishing in 6th place.

In the A3 race Maurice Hickey and Brian Hallissey had two laps to complete, both finishing comfortably in the bunch. In the A1, A2 race Damian Travers had to complete 3 laps of this gruelling course, he finished comfortably in the bunch. Well done to all, next week racing is in Carrick. more photos available here.

This week two groups left the square, one went to Affane and back to Dungarvan with group 2 to aiming for a bit more distance travelled to Lismore, Deerpark, and back to Dungarvan. Well done to all.

Tip for beginners: do not cycle in a gear that is too difficult for you. The simplest thing to do is to watch the gears that others are using. If you cycle too hard a gear, you put more pressure on your leg muscles than is necessary. You may be able to do this for a short while, but it will eventually catch up with you. So, for easier cycling, pedal an easier gear.

THANKS

Thanks to Paul Lonergan, Rory Wyley and the Dan Morrisey Carrick Wheelers team for helping Enda out in Ras Mumhan with service etc.

SIOBHAN DUNPHY TAKES WEEK 1 OF LIAM ROSSITER PYT

Week 1 saw 21 people sign-on to take on the clock! With very strong winds and looming rain showers times were predicted and proceedings got underway promptly at 6.30. Most accurate on the night was Siobhan Dunphy, out by 7secs. Hopefully next week will see better weather and more will support this event. Thanks to Emma and Liam for time keeping. Check out the photo gallery on the website. Sign on this week is at 6:30 with the first rider off at 6:45.

WEEKEND SPINS

The fine weather ensured big turnouts for club spins last weekend. On Saturday a large group headed for Cappoquin and Lismore before splitting at Tallow with some riders going to Camphire and the others going on to Youghal and home. As is the norm these days, Sunday saw a large crowd assembled in The Square with a number of routes on offer. A big group went to Ballymacarbry, Clogheen and over The Vee while another group took on the Sean Kelly 100k route, going to Carrick, Clonmel and Ballymacarbry.

BEGINNERS WELCOME

On a beautiful Easter Sunday morning, our ever-increasing group of steadier cyclists completed a lap of Whitechurch while others continued on to Lismore and Deerpark. It is very nice to see new faces arriving each week, and furthermore, returning week by week. The pace of this spin today was again suited to those in the group and we completed the circuit in 1hour 6 minutes at an average of 14mph. The final option at present on our Option C Steady Spin is the longer trip to Lismore and beyond. This group at the moment is cycling really well, led by the ever-present Eddie Moore, and today they went on a bit further to Deerpark giving a total of 35 miles in all. The pace of this group is just a bit stronger at about 15 mph. Riders in this group have been very consistently present for the past number of weeks and are now enjoying a dramatically increased level of fitness. Many thanks to Eddie for looking after this group on the road.

RACING UPDATE

Damian and Enda took part in the Easter stage races in Gorey and Kerry respectively last weekend. I hope to have some reports next week on how they went.

LIAM ROSSITER PREDICT YOUR TIME STARTS TONIGHT

Tonight (Wednesday) sees the start of the club's competitive season with the Liam Rossiter Predict Your Time competition. Sign on is at John Foley's, Kilrush from 6:15 with the first rider off at 6:30. Timekeepers for tonight are Liam and Emma. Remember, it's not the fastest cyclist that wins but whoever finishes closest to their predicted time. Many thanks to Liam for his generous sponsorship.

Please note that anyone wishing to participate in this season's club competitions will need to hold at least a club competition license. You can try an event for one night but a license is necessary for subsequent nights. Please contact Enda Donnelly with any queries.

WEEKEND SPINS

Another fine weather spell at the weekend brought plenty of cyclists onto the roads. Saturday saw 2 groups heading towards Cappoquin. One group then went onto Villierstown, Clashmore and home via Ardmore and Old Parish. The other group went to Ballyduff, Tallow and home.

On Sunday a large group went to Lismore, Deerpark, Knockanore and Youghal, returning home via Ardmore and Old Parish.

Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s, Kilrush on Saturday and The Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am. There will also be a spin on Easter Monday, meeting at John Foley's at 9:30.

BEGINNERS WELCOME

We had 2 groups this morning, one going to Lismore and back via Deerpark and the other covering the Whitechurch circuit.

We will welcome any newcomers to cycling to join with us on Sunday mornings. First time newcomers will complete a 6 mile circuit for a number of weeks until such time as they feel comfortable completing 2 laps of a six mile circuit. This circuit is: from Kilrush roundabout to Powersfield House. Turn left here and continue on to Carriglea School. Turn left again and arrive at t-junction on the Kilmurray Road. From there return directly to the town bypass at the old Glass Factory. As soon as you are comfortable completing 2 laps of this circuit, (12 miles) it is another short jump to complete the regular Whitechurch route (15 miles). We are committed to ensuring that the pace of the spin will be suited to your ability. We also feel sure that if you commit to these spins for 10 weeks, your level of fitness will improve dramatically. We meet every Sunday in the Square at 9.30 and depart shortly after the main group of regular cyclists. All newcomers welcome, provided you are over 16, and have a helmet.

Because this group is built around 3 different distances (6 miles, 15 miles and 30+ miles), we need one or two other club members to help out with one of the distances. If you are willing to help out with any of these distances, we will be delighted to have you on board.

RACING REPORTS

Ras Luimni – Caherconlish, March 28th

7 club members made the trip to county Limerick last Sunday for this race. The course was generally flat but with a lumpy couple of kms at the start of each lap.

Enda Donnelly was our sole rider in the A1/A2 race, over 5 laps. In a race that was won by Dan Morrissey's Andrew Ahearne over The Edge's Sean Lacey, Enda finished in the bunch. He was unlucky not to make a break and was involved in a few moves but unfortunately, and by his own admission, not the right ones. He was happy with his race though, as part of his preparation for next weekend's Ras Mumhan.

Brian Hallissey was our representative in the A3 race which was 3 laps of the circuit. When what turned out to be the winning break got away the bunch couldn't get organised to chase it down. Brian tried to get across to the break but couldn't make it and the breakaway managed to finish just ahead of the main bunch with the win going to Blarney's Brendan McLoughlin.

We had 5 riders in the 2 lap A4 race; Emma Walsh, Keith Walsh, Rory Moloney, Anthony Dwyer and Sean Dwyer. Sean punctured in the first 5 miles and despite (or maybe because of) a wheel change couldn't get back on. Rather than making a beeline for the cakes and sandwiches as many might have predicted he rode around to complete the race, working up an appetite and getting in some training for Whitechurch. There was more drama a couple of miles up the road as Emma came down in a crash. Thankfully she was ok. The bunch stayed together for the duration of the race, shutting down any attacks, despite efforts from Keith, Rory and Anthony to escape. With the race showing no sign of breaking up on the fast downhill to the finish there was little room for manoeuvre and the 3 lads rolled in with the bunch. The best of luck to Enda and Damian who are taking part in Ras Mumhan and the Gorey 3 day respectively this weekend.

WEEKEND SPINS

Club spins continue to increase in popularity each week and the fine spring weather ensured another large turnout last weekend.

On Saturday one group went to Ballymacarbry, Clogheen, over The Vee and home by Cappoquin while a smaller group went around the Millstreet circuit.

Sunday saw over 40 riders assembled in The Square. A large bunch went to Youghal Bridge, Tallow and home by Lismore and Cappoquin and another group travelled in the opposite direction going back via Clashmore and Mount Stuart. It's great to see the numbers growing each week and hopefully this trend will continue as the weather begins to improve.

Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s, Kilrush on Saturday and The Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am.

BEGINNERS WELCOME

On a wonderful spring morning it was very heartening to see a group of 12 with our Option C regular Sunday spin. The entire group stayed together until we reached the Welcome Inn at Cappagh, where one group turned left and completed the Whitechurch circuit while the other went on to Lismore and Tourin.

RACING – Carrick & Carrigaline

- Large numbers of DCC riders take to the road!!!

9 DCC riders made the short trip to Carrick on Suir for the annual St. Patrick's day race last week.Enda Donnelly and Damian Travers lined out in the A1/A2 race. Again the winning move formed at the start of the race. A break of 6 riders went away. The break included Banteer winner and man of the moment Sean Lacey. Enda tried to get across to the break with two others, but they couldn't quite bridge the gap and went back into the bunch. Despite attempts to form a chasing group, the race remained as a main bunch and a leading break. The break shelled riders until there were two remaining and Sean Lacey beat Robin Kelly of Comeragh CC to the finish.

Damian had the bad luck to puncture on the second lap, but completed the race as training for Easter stage racing.

Enda didn't have much left in the legs for the finish up St. John's hill, but finished safely in the bunch and feels his form is improving as the races go by.

Maurice Hickey, Brian Hallissey, Keith Walsh, Anthony Dwyer, Rory Moloney and Sean Dwyer started the A3/A4 race. Again there was a very large field in this race, almost 120 riders. The race blew apart at the start of the second lap and some harsh lessons in positioning were learnt by our newer racers. After this a group of 10 riders broke away. Brian, Maurice and Keith were in the main bunch but weren't able to bring back the break. Brian and Keith finished strongly and both were in the top 15. Sean and Anthony found themselves in a group just off the main bunch, but this group was unwilling to work together and never regained contact. The lads put in a good shift though, doing most of the work for the group and hopefully this will stand to them. Debutant Rory was also caught out when the field split but worked hard and showed plenty of determination completing the race.

Damian Travers, Maurice Hickey, Brian Hallissey and Rory Moloney made the trip to Cork last Sunday for The Edge Sports race in Carrigaline. Run over a circuit officially described as undulating, but for which the terms vicious and savage were also heard, Brian was among the fewer than 20 finishers from over 100 starters. The race was won by race organiser, The Edge's Timmy Barry. I hope to have a full report of the carnage next week.

LIAM ROSSITER PREDICT YOUR TIME STARTS MARCH 31st

 WEEKEND SPINS

With the fine spell of weather continuing, club spins once again attracted large numbers at the weekend.

Saturday saw 2 groups going over the Vee; from different directions. One group went via Ballymacarbry, Newcastle, Clogheen and Lismore, passing the other group descending the Vee in the opposite direction.

There was another huge crowd in The Square on Sunday morning. A large group went to Cappoquin, Camphire, Knockanore and Youghal with another bunch going to Cappoquin, Villierstown, Clashmore, Ardmore and Old Parish.

Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s, Kilrush on Saturday and The Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am.

BEGINNERS WELCOME

We are always pleased to welcome more beginner cyclists. We are committed to making sure that we provide the most suitable distance for anyone who comes with us for the first time. The beginner’s route is around the 6 mile Kilmurray circuit. This is a quiet road and suitable for those who join with us for the first time.

Advice for those just beginning with us: as the days get longer during March get in a short spin midweek. This will increase your fitness quicker, and will also ensure that if you have to miss our Sunday group spin for any reason, you will be able to keep up when you return the following week. Below is a rough guide to what we aim to provide for beginner cyclists: 4 weeks of Kilmurray circuit. This is just over 6 miles. As the weeks go by, you may be able to do 2 laps of this circuit. Then you will move on to our regular Whitechurch Route. This is a 15 mile route, so if you are able to complete 2 laps of Kilmurray, then this route is the next logical step. If you do this route for 4 weeks, the next step is to cycle to Affane for 2 weeks. You are then ready to complete the process of cycling 30 mile (50km) to Lismore and back. Of course, if you want to stay with a particular shorter route for a longer number of weeks, then do that.

RACING – BANTEER BANDITS

6  DCC riders went to Banteer, Co. Cork for the Mick Cahill memorial race on Sunday last.

First away were Damian Travers and Enda Donnelly in the A1/A2 race, 7 laps of a 15km circuit. The race was totally dominated by The Edge CC who took the first 3 places and 5 of the top 10. After a group of 5 broke away on the first lap the lads tried to get away a few times but every move was chased and closed down by the rest of The Edge team and they finished in the bunch.

The A3/A4 race was over 5 laps of the same circuit. There was a huge field in this, including Maurice Hickey, Brian Hallissey, Anthony Dwyer and Sean Dwyer among the 140 or so riders. The A4s had a 30 second start but the whole field was together by the end of the first lap, making for pretty chaotic racing. Maurice escaped in what turned out to be the winning breakaway and secured a top 10 finish. Good work Maurice. Brian and Sean finished well up in the main bunch and Anthony led in the next bunch on his debut outing having been unlucky to get caught on the wrong side of a split on the third lap.

CLUB COMPETITION LICENSES

Please note that anyone wishing to participate in this season's club competitions will need to hold at least a club competition license. You can try an event for one night but a license is necessary for subsequent nights. Please contact Enda Donnelly with any queries.

The club's competitive season starts on March 31st with the Liam Rossiter Predict Your Time competition. This will run for 5 nights over the Whitechurch circuit with the first rider off at 6:30 on the first Wednesday and 6:45 on the 4 following Wednesdays. Sign on is at John Foley's, Kilrush. RACING - Broadford

7 DCC riders headed to Broadford, Co. Limerick for the Cycling Pursuits cup last Sunday.

Emma Walsh and Sean Dwyer lined up in the A4 race, a pretty flat 55km over 4 laps. The over-40s were given a 2 minute start and proved better organised than the main bunch, staying away for the duration. The strong wind was making attacking difficult but Emma and Sean were active near the head of the bunch throughout and both finished well up in the group, very happy with their performances. The A4 category should attract a lot more members over the season looking to find an outlet for their hard training.

The second race was a 7 lap handicapped event with the A3s starting 3 minutes before the A2/A1 group for the 60 mile race.
Maurice Hickey and Brian Hallissey started with the A3s and Enda Donnelly and season debutants Dzintars Klava and Damian Travers started with the A2/A1 bunch.wheel

Seeing as the A3 bunch was not cooperating well Maurice Hickey took matters into his own hands and attacked with another rider to forge ahead for almost 3 laps. A powerful performance on a windy day. The A2/A1 group worked better together and caught the others half way through the race. Shortly after this catch was made Damian had the bad luck to get caught behind a crash and damage to his front wheel meant the end of Damian’s race. After a couple of laps without anybody succeeding in escaping from the bunch, Brian Hallisey and 5 others formed the break of the day. They had to work hard in the wind to get away and first and second place eventually came from this break. Unfortunately Brian, and his 3 other breakaway companions (including Abbeyside man Pat Kenneally) were overhauled by the bunch just before the finish. It was a great performance from Brian to get into a break with some very strong senior riders on a course that would not suit him. Enda and Dzintars were happy with their race and Maurice punctured near the end of the race, but got a great workout with his early move.

WEEKEND SPINS

Club spins were well supported again last weekend as large numbers took to the roads to make the most of the spring sunshine. The easterly wind meant that the coast road featured prominently in route planning and on both Saturday and Sunday groups headed for Bonmahon and Kill with riders going on to Kilmeaden, Portlaw and Carrick on Suir.

Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s, Kilrush on Saturday and The Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am.

BEGINNERS WELCOME

Again this week we were pleased to welcome more beginner cyclists. We are committed to making sure that we provide the most suitable distance for anyone who comes with us for the first time. The beginners route decided upon last week is around the 6 mile Kilmurray circuit. This is a quiet road and suitable for those who join with us for the first time. The group today decided that they wanted to do a little bit more, so they cycled it all over again! A total of 12 miles! Well done! Our more regular cyclists completed the usual Lismore route, getting there in record time with a strong wind behind them. Of course, the journey home was tough, but the group worked very well together keeping turns at the front very short.

This will run for 5 nights over the Whitechurch circuit with the first rider off at 6:30 on the first Wednesday and 6:45 on the 4 following Wednesdays. Sign on is at John Foley's, Kilrush. WEEKEND SPINS

Weatherwise it was another great weekend and once again the club had large numbers on the roads. Saturday saw a big group going down the coast road, heading across to Kilmacthomas and Carrick before returning home. The other group went to Ballymacarbry, Newcastle and Clogheen before climbing The Vee and coming back via Lismore. We had another huge crowd in The Square on Sunday morning and there was a variety of spins on offer. The biggest group went over The Vee via Ballymacarbry and Clogheen. Another bunch took on the Carrick, Clonmel circuit and more riders went to Lismore and back.

Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s, Kilrush on Saturday and The Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am.

BEGINNERS WELCOME

New beginners group completed a 6 mile circuit; From the Square along bypass to Kilrush, Carriglea School, Kilmurray and back to Kilrush by the old glass factory site. With the longer evenings now, commit to a similar distance twice a week; once during mid-week, and on Sunday with the group. Increase the distance by a mile or two at most per week only when you feel ready to do so. This Kilmurray route is ideal, because when you return to Kilrush, there are so many options along the town bypass to add on an extra mile or two. After about a month you may be comfortable doing approximately 10 miles. You're on your way!

If you are interested in such a distance, come along on Sunday mornings for a 9.35 start. Helmet compulsory. Don't worry about not having all the gear, and fancy jerseys etc...wear comfortable warm clothing, and gloves. Bike & cycling advice will be free!

RACING - Tralee

3 DCC riders travelled to Tralee for the Lacey Cup race - the traditional season opener in Munster cycling. In the handicapped race, the A4 riders were first to start, then, Dungarvan's Brian Hallisey and Maurice Hickey went off with the A3s, Enda Donnelly went off with the A2s and finally the A1s set off from Tralee. Brian Hallisey had a minor mechanical problem early in the race but he did well to get in with the A1 train and this group soon swept up the A2s, who in turn had caught the A3s, all in the first quarter of the race. On the first climb of Gleann na nGealt the move of the day went with 4 of the strongest A1s making a break for it. Although the chasing bunch moved along at a good pace, the four in front set a new course record to stay clear to the finish and Sean Lacey won ahead of Paul Griffin and Stephen Barret. Maurice and Brian showed their good form to put in some attacks during the race and Enda finished in the bunch, so a satisfying start to the racing season in beautiful spring sunshine for all 3.

Next week's race is in Broadford Co. Limerick, where some more Dungarvan riders plan to make their season's debut.

WEEKEND SPINS

As is the norm these days the club spins were very well attended again last weekend. Indeed it's a sign of the strength of the club that there are so many people out cycling now that it's not possible to list everyone any more. The freezing fog that covered the town on both mornings wasn't enough to deter the hardy regulars, new faces, and old faces returning from hibernation.

On Saturday one group stayed on the main road to Castlemartyr and back, while a second group went to Cappoquin, Knockanore, Youghal and Ardmore.

Sunday saw some riders heading down the coast road to Bonmahon, Kill and Kilmeaden, and across to Portlaw before going home via Carroll's Cross. A second bunch went to Tallow, Camphire and home via Cappoquin.

Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s, Kilrush on Saturday and The Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am.

WEEKEND SPINS

Good cycling weather at the weekend brought large numbers out on club spins, covering most of the county on various routes.

On Saturday one group went to Mahon Bridge, Carroll's Cross, Kill and home on the coast road while another went to Carrick, Portlaw, Kilmeaden and home via the main road.

Sunday was Valentine's day but this didn't stop a large crowd assembling in The Square. Obviously plenty of brownie points had been built up. One group went to Ballymac, Clogheen and over The Vee and a second bunch went to Ballyduff, Tallow, Camphire and home.Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s, Kilrush on Saturday and The Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am.

Club spins were well attended again last weekend. We had a big group on the road on Saturday which split in Lismore with some riders going to Ballyduff, Tallow and home via Camphire, and others going to the top of The Vee and back by The Cats.

We are getting very impressive numbers in The Square on Sundays and last weekend was no exception. Two groups headed down the coast road to Bonmahon and Kill, coming back via Kilmeaden and Carroll's cross.

DCC would like to remind those members that drive in to meet the spins that bikes are compulsory and should not be forgotten.

Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s Kilrush on Saturday and The Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am.

BEGINNERS WELCOME

This Option "C" Beginner spin is going from strength to strength. Many of our recent regulars were missing last Sunday, and yet we had a very good group of 8 cyclists, all of whom were first-timers with this spin. Some did a short 10 mile loop to Killishal and home by backroads around Ballinacourty, Cappagh. Others moved on to a more challenging distance by going to the Welcome Inn and back, while the main group travelled at a gentle pace to Lismore. It was decided to return by Ballylea and Kilbree on the far side of the river to Cappoquin. Unfortunately we were to face a strong headwind on the return to Dungarvan, but the group reduced the pace and stayed together to finish well.

Anyone considering joining with us on Sunday mornings may be able to fit in a midweek spin from now on as the evenings are getting longer. A 45-minute to one-hour spin on a regular basis once a week will help you to increase your fitness level very quickly. Do not aim to cycle too quickly...your aim over the first 6 to 8 weeks should be to increase the distance you cycle. The general rule of thumb is to increase your distance by approximately 10% each week. So if you are capable of cycling 5 miles, the following would be a good progression over the 6 weeks: 5 miles; 6 miles; 8 miles; 9 miles; 10 miles; 10 miles. Stay at this distance for a week or two, and then push up the distance once again. Don't forget to drink before, during and after your spin.

DUNGARVAN CC OPEN ROAD RACE

Dungarvan CC are pleased to welcome Specsavers as sponsor of our annual road race. This will be held on May 16th and is an opportunity to witness competitive racing from some of the country's top cyclists. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank Joe Kelly for his generosity in effort and sponsorship of this race over the last number of years. Much appreciated.

1st FEBRUARY
WEEKEND SPINS

The good weather at the weekend meant there were large numbers of club members on the roads. On Saturday one group went to Cappoquinn, Villierstown, Aglish, Clashmore, Ardmore and Old Parish. A second group went to Carrick, Portlaw, Kill and Bonmahon, before taking the hilly route into Stradbally through Ballydwane and Ballyvooney. Tremendous fun. Really. On Sunday three groups left The Square. One bunch went to Youghal, coming back via Ardmore and Old Parish. Another group did  Cappoquinn, Villierstown, Aglish, Clashmore, Ardmore and Old Parish and a third group went to Affane and Lismore. Your scribe's normally reliable internal satnav led us astray a couple of times so if anyone wants to donate a new Garmin 705 to me I won't be too offended.Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s Kilrush on Saturday and The Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am.

BEGINNERS WELCOME

Cold weather on Sunday last did not deter our regulars on this spin. In fact, so regular are some at this stage that they can no longer be called beginners! Proof of the pudding really, because these cyclists now cycle to Lismore and back with ease. The pace is kept easy, and that's the way we want to keep it. Last Sunday some went to Affane (10 miles) and back, while others completed the 30 mile Lismore out-and-back. On any Sunday where we have new faces, we recommend going to The Welcome Inn (7 miles) and returning directly, or around our regular Whitechurch route. A group leader will stay with you. If you are thinking of joining with us we meet at 9.30 on Sundays and wait for a few minutes after the main club spin has departed. A beginner spin for you may be 5 miles, and if that is your starting point, well that's where we will take you. If you feel able for a bit more, we can do that too. Our regulars have spoken in recent weeks about varying the route. This will make spins more interesting and enjoyable. Finally, as the cold weather sticks with us please wear several layers when cycling. A wind-proof jacket will also be helpful to you.

WWAC 10 MILE RACE

WEEKEND SPINS

We finally got a respite from the atrocious recent weather and as a result of the springlike conditions there were big turnouts for the club spins at the weekend.

Saturday's spin went to Tallow, Youghal and home on the main road.

Sunday saw a large crowd assemble in The Square and riders split into a few groups. Two groups headed west on the main road with cyclists turning at Youghal, Killeagh or Castlemartyr. Another group headed for Cappagh and Affane with some riders going on to Lismore. Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s Kilrush on Saturday and The Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am.

It was good to see more new faces this week after a month of rest. Remember: whatever pace you want to set, we'll bring you along. Stick with it once a week for 10 weeks and your fitness level will improve quite a lot. The key to improvement is consistency. Tell your friends and bring them along with you.

For those who have been with us regularly it is now time to apply for your Cycling Ireland membership. Print off the application form on the website and send it off to Enda Donnelly. Beginner tip: do not try to cycle at someone else's pace. If you do, you will manage for a while, but you will tire quickly. Cycle your own pace, and keep it up regularly to improve.

NEXT COMMITTEE MEETING:

The next committee meeting will take place on Monday 1st February at 8pm in Minnie's Bar, Abbeyside.

HOLIDAY/WEEKEND SPINS

The lengthy cold snap disrupted many training plans over the Christmas break. Because of the freezing conditions the time of the group spins was moved to 11am, and although not much warmer by then there were still groups of dedicated cyclists on the roads most days. Some of us found other diversions in Quality Street and darts however.

Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s Kilrush on Saturday and The Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am.
