The second night of our hill climb predict your time, time trial up the old sweep had a larger turnout than previous so thanks to all the brave souls who sweated up the hill.  We had 3 people within 5 seconds and one more under 10 which is remarkably close (lots of runs up the sweep during the week i think).  Congratulations to Jason Travers who was the winner on the night being out by only 2 seconds, next up our recent summer series winner Sean Dwyer out by 3 seconds, normally good enough to win on any other night, next was Ritchie Power out by 5 seconds.  The challenge is on, to be closer than 2 seconds next week who will rise to the challenge.  Thanks to Mark Power and Pat O'Driscoll for co-ordinating our cyclists and time keeping.

This 30 strong group was made up of approximately half regular club cyclist and half non-club members and newcomers. There were two spins a 50mile and a 30-mile decided on giving cyclists plenty of options. The 50-mile spin went to Cappoquin, Lismore, Tallow, Camphire and home through Cappoquin. THE SEAN KELLY TOUR

The Sean Kelly tour took place on Sunday the 24th of August last and amazingly the weather was good for the event. A massive number over 1800 riders took to the start line and Dungarvan Cycling Club was well represented with over 30 riders taken on a variety of the three different routes that were arranged as part of the overall event.

The 50 km Kelly Cruise was accessible to most people who do some regular cycling and some club members used this as a way to introduce there families to the sport they love. The 100 km Kelly Legacy was tough but suitable for the experienced touring cyclist and a number of our members took up this challenge. Finally the 160km Kelly Comeragh Challenge was the route that the majority of club members took and thanks to some long training spins over the last number of weeks all got over this extremely difficult challenge with ease. Dungarvan Cycling Club would like to thank Waterford County Council and it’s organising committee for organising such a great event in the town. We are sure that due to the success of this event more people will take to cycling regularly.

WEEKEND SPINS

The weekend spin this week was The Sean Kelly Tour.

Weekend spins will revert to the normal John Foley’s Kilrush on Saturday and the Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am from next week on.

GER WYLEY SPONSERED PREDICT YOUR TIME HILL CLIMB COMPETITION WEEK 4 RESULTS

Week 4 of the hill climb predict your time competition took place last Wednesday on another blustery evening on the old sweep. Nine riders took on the challenge and the winner was Frank Browne at just 3 seconds out on his predicted time. Frank is riding very well at the moment and I’m sure is now looking forward to next weeks Sean Kelly tour. Second place on the night went to Enda Donnelly fresh from his holidays he climbed the hill in 6 minutes 34 seconds. Third place went to Jason Travers at 6 seconds out he climbed the hill in a great time of 7 minutes 36 seconds. Thanks to Pat, Sean and Keith for the timekeeping again on the night and a big thanks to Ger Wyley for his kind sponsorship.

Week 3 of the hill climb predict your time, time trial up the old sweep was a blustery affair, no matter where you were there seemed to be a wind buffeting you (either that or my legs were gone) so well done to all who participated.  Winner on the night was Sean Dwyer - a consistent winner theses days - who got his time spot on, next was Ritchie Power, out by 1 second, he must wonder what he has to do to win, in third we had super vet Ray dwyer with the fatest time of the night but out by 3 seconds.  Thanks has to go to Pat and Mark for the timekeeping again tonight

23/07/08

Wednesdy night was the start of out hill climb predict your time, time trial up the old sweep.  It has to be said that it was a very dissapointing turnout with only eight riders lining up, but their enthusiasm well made up for their lack in numbers.  It was like an alpine stage of the tour, looking up the mighty sweep you could see the mist at the top as the peak broke the clouds, well maybe not that dramatic but hey, we live in the sunny south east (or so I'm told).

Frank (Carlos Sastre) Browne was closest to his predicted time being only out by 9 seconds, next was a relative newcomer to cycling Jason (Samuel Sanchez) Travers out by 11 seconds and in third we had Davy (Andy Schleck) Tobin out by 17seconds.

Thanks very much to Ger Wyley for kindly sponsoring this event and to Pat and Damian for the timekeeping.

It would be much appreciated if we could have a larger turnout next week, the group went for a training spin after the hill climb, details unknown at this time

O’MAHONY CYCLES AND NURSERY SUMMER SERIES – NEW COMER SEAN DWYER TAKES ADVANTAGE OF ENDA’S MECHANICAL DIFFICULTIES TO TAKE VICTORY ON THE NIGHT AND IN THE OVERALL SERIES.

Week 8 of the O’Mahony Cycles & Nursery Summer Series took place last Wednesday the 2nd of July. Again the night itself was a perfectly dry night for racing. At the start of the race there were three riders Enda Donnelly, Keith Walsh and Sean Dwyer in contention for the series. Sean was first off on the night with the two lads chasing in a very strong scratch group. On the turn down to Milstreet Sean and his group were joined by a strong group riding just ahead of the scratch group. All managed to get on to this group with the result being large group working very hard to get Sean to the line first. Meanwhile the scratch group were chasing very hard and reducing the gap as the miles went on. Then disaster struck for Enda when he broke a spoke in his back wheel, which also lead to him puncturing. With the scratch group now reduced by a member they lost their rhythm and were unable to catch the large group containing Sean just ahead. Sean was delighted to take first placed surrounded by his hard working group with the scratch group crossing the line shortly afterwards.

A great nights racing well done to all involved. All the club would like to congratulate Sean on a fantastic result all the more impressive considering this is his first year cycling. A big thanks to our sponsers Tony & Siobhan O’Mahony without whom these types of events could not take place. Finally a big thanks Fraincis, Siobhan, Niamh and all who helped with sign-on and handicapping for the 8 weeks

EMMA WALSH TAKES NINTH IN THE NATIONAL LADIES ROAD RACE CHAMPIONSHIPS

O’MAHONY CYCLES AND NURSERY SUMMER SERIES – LAST YEARS CHAMPIUON COLIN ORGAN TAKES VICTORY ON WEEK 7.

Week 7 of the O’Mahony Cycles & Nursery Summer Series took place last Wednesday the 25th of June. The night itself was a perfect night for racing, a dry night with a cross wind going up the Clonmel road, a headwind going through Millstreet and Modeligo and a tail wind giving some assistance coming back in the Cappoquin road.

The night started out with Heather and Sean getting a 2 minute start up the hill on the main bunch, consisting of 8 riders, these came together just at the turn off the Clonmel road and worked well together. The scratch group consisting of the remaining 7 riders had 6 minutes to make up on this group.

The first group broke apart at Modeligo school where John Horgan, Colin Organ, Tony Murray, John Flynn and Emma Walsh jumped the rest of the bunch and worked together well to stay clear. The scratch group caught first sight of the bunch at Cappagh Creamery and caught up with them just before the Master McGrath monument. Thinking they were going to fight it out for the spoils until they realised there were bodies missing. They pushed on again but failed to catch the break who crossed the line around 20 seconds ahead. Colin Organ took first, Emma 2nd, Tony 3rd and John Horgan 4th. Enda and Keith two of the leading contenders in the league sprinted up the hill to overtake John Flynn with Enda going on to take 5th position.

A great nights racing with the handicapping spot on. Well done to all involved.

Next week is the last week of this competition and it’s still all to play for. The top three riders Enda Donnelly, Keith Walsh and Sean Dwyer are all in with a chance of winning the overall title with only 4 points separating them. All riders are encouraged to come along on the last night for what should be an excellent finish to the competition.

DUNGARVAN CYCLING CLUB RACING TEAM UPDATE

Enda Donnelly was the lone racer on duty last weekend when he travelled to Kerry to compete in the Currow Open combined race. This race consisted of 3 laps of a 20K circuit. Enda must be infamous down those parts now, as he had to compete under the alias of Ed Kelly. On lap 2 Enda broke clear with Kevin Shelly and Sean McIllroy both from Dan Morrissey CC.  Before the end of lap 2, Andre Engeman, Tom Shanahan and Laurent Dumoulin had crossed over to join this trio. After some hard racing on lap 3 Shanahan, Engemann and Dumoulin broke clear to finish in that order. Enda went on to win the sprint for fourth spot overall. Good to see Enda riding strong again after a very frustrating spring and early summer.

O’MAHONY CYCLES AND NURSERY SUMMER SERIES – HEATHER PURCELL OF SLANEY CYCLING CLUB TAKES VICTORY ON WEEK 6.

At the start this Wednesday what looked like a second very wet night for this years series suddenly changed and rewarded the 12 dedicated cyclists that turned up to race. The night became perfect for cycling with a slight headwind out the Clonmel road but a nice tailwind home. The only other thing you could ask for is that they would flatten out that road up past Colligan. First prize on the winners podium went to Heather Purcell of Slaney Cycling Club, this was Heather's third week supporting our race so it was time for some just rewards. Next over the line was Sean "showery" Dwyer whose dedication of late is really paying off, he’s even starting to show his experienced Uncle Ray how it's done. Third on the night went to Colin Organ (he must have worked hard up the hill this week). In fourth was Emma Walsh another rider flying these days with some people suggesting that the scratch group is calling. The last of the bonus points went to Tony Murray in fifth place. With only two weeks to go it’s still all to play for and with only 3 points separating the top 3 positions in the league the handicapper is going to have a difficult task on the two remaining nights.

SEAN KELLY TOUR TRAINING DAY

On Sunday the 22nd of June Dungarvan held its inaugural Sean Kelly Tour Training day. Despite the very high winds on the morning the day turned out to be great success with over 40 cyclists taking part. The group was made up of Dungarvan Cycling Club members and a large number of people relatively new to cycling. There were 5 routes for people to choose from varying from 10 miles to 60 miles so all abilities were well catered for. The big success of the day was that it gave people the chance to experience cycling in a group and to see the advantages that this can bring. The Sean Kelly Tour takes place this year on Sunday the 24th of August and all members of the club hope that this training day will encourage some of the new participants to sign up for one of the three routes.

Entry forms for the Sean Kelly Tour can be got from Ger Wyley Sports Dungarvan or O’Mahony Cycles & Nursery in Abbeyside. Alternatively Entry forms are available online at: http://www.waterfordcoco.ie/en/tourism/seankellytour/

CONGRATULATIONS TO DUNGARVAN’S WICKLOW 200 TEAM

The club would like to congratulate its Wicklow 200 team of Frank Browne, Richie Power, Tony Murray, Pat Murray and Emma Walsh. The Wicklow 200 is a gruelling 200km (125mile!) one-day event that takes in a number of challenging climbs over the Wicklow Mountains.

CONGRATULATIONS TO DUNGARVANS EMMA WALSH

The club would like to congratulate Emma Walsh on her recent fourth place finish in a very competitive ladies race in Wicklow.

Emma Walsh, Damian Travers and Enda Donnelly lined out for Dungarvan CC in Ashford last weekend for the Ashford Grand Prix Handicapped race for Ladies and Senior C riders. The race was 12 laps for the men and 11 for the women. A lap was 5k, giving roughly a 6 minute head start for the women.

The pace was fast and furious from the start; the women’s group got organised fast and started working together with the hope of trying to stay away.

In the men’s group, attacks where being made but with such a small lap and so many competitors it was impossible for any break to stay clear. Damian and Enda both tried hard to get away but found themselves in breaks with others that just didn’t want to work.

By lap 9 it became clear that the women’s group would not be caught but it was going to be close. Both groups came down to bunch sprints. The women’s group saw Emma finishing strong taking 4th place. Meanwhile Damian and Enda were looking good coming into the final straight, but with a crash close to the line it took away from there sprint and both were lucky to stay on the bike. Damian finished in a very good 7th place with Enda crossing the line shortly behind.

The women took the first six prizes leaving the first six unplaced prizes to the men.

NEXT COMMITTEE MEETING

The next Committee Meeting will take place at 8pm on Monday 30th June at Minnie’s Bar, Abbeyside. A full attendance is requested, as there is a lot of organising to be completed.

DZINTARS KLAVA WINS THE NEW IMAGES SPONSERED CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP TIME TRIAL

Dzintar’s Klava completed his transformation from brilliant runner to champion cyclist by taken first place in this years New-Images sponsored club championship time trial last Wednesday. The conditions were ideal for time trialling with a good tail wind on the cyclists back coming in the 5.8km route. This lead to some very fast times, but fortunately for Dzintar’s none faster than his excellent time of 8 mins 6.49 secs. Second on the night was Keith Radley with another good time of 8 mins 12.04 secs. Keith’s tough triathlon training schedule is really paying off at the moment. Third place overall went to the ever consistent Enda Donnelly in a time of 8 mins 14.15 secs. Division B of this year’s competition was won by John Flynn in a time of 8 mins 47.14 secs with Sean Dwyer taking the Division C title in a time of 9 mins 24.44 secs. Well done to all who took part, full results are available on the website. Finally thanks to our generous sponsor Nicola Dee and to Michael Dee for helping on the night and presenting the prizes.
