DUNGARVAN CYCLING CLUB RACING TEAM UPDATE “WHITECHURCH WIPEOUT”

Last Sunday 6 Dungarvan Credit Union C.C. members travelled to Whitechurch, Co Cork for the last race of March. The course was described by some as a bit up and down but after four laps of it the team agreed that it was the last way they’d describe it.

Maurice Hickey, Keith Walsh, Dzintars Klava, Keith Radley, Mark Power and Damian Travers lined up for the start.

As usual after the neutralised zone had been passed things kicked up a gear, Dzintars tried to cross over to a break that got away from the start and came close to making it but just lost out and got overtaken by the bunch. Due to the adverse weather conditions of driving rain and very cold temperatures the numbers in the race had been cut by approx 50% so Dungarvan were left with the two Keith’s, Maurice and Damian. Keith Walsh got away on a break on lap 2 with a few strong riders but this fell apart and they were caught by the bunch on Lap 3.  All the other Dungarvan members were in the bunch marking attacks and keeping things under control.  There was a bit of cat and mouse for the rest of the lap before Martin O’Loughlin, Andre Engermann and 4 other riders broke from the group.

On the final lap, Keith Walsh broke away with Michael McGrath (Comeragh CC) to come home in 7th position.  Keith Radley was first home in the bunch sprint with Maurice next and then Damian.

All the riders agreed after the race that it was the most difficult so far due to the course and the weather conditions. Here’s hoping the remaining races will get easier.

DUNGARVAN CYCLING CLUB RACING TEAM UPDATE

Members of the Dungarvan Cycling Club racing team were competing in Limerick, Carlow and Carrick-On-Suir over the weekend.

– Two top ten finishes for Keith Walsh

Plenty of racing was on offer over the weekend seeing Dungarvan Cycling Club represented in all three events, Limerick, Carlow and Carrick.

Saturday saw Keith Radley travel to Limerick, he was going well but had to pull out due to mechanical trouble.

Sunday saw Keith Walsh, Dzintars Klava, Maurice Hickey and Keith Radley travel to Carlow to take part in one of the toughest races of the season. Once again bad luck struck Keith Radley who was taking part in the 1 lap race, he punctured not far from the finish, after some hard work had found himself in the leading break with four others. Meanwhile in the 2 lap race, Keith Walsh came out best on the day finishing a very creditable 7th after working hard in a break of four to chase down the leading group of four which included some of Irelands top cyclists -  the current National Veteran Champion, Martin O’Loughlin and two of the best juniors in the country Sam Bennett and Philip Lavery.

Monday then saw the club head the shorter distance to Carrick. Taking part in the combined race were Keith Walsh, Mark Power, Dzintars Klava, Damian Travers, Maurice Hickey, Emma Walsh and Keith Radley. The race was 3 laps (100k); attacks came fast and furious in the opening kilometres. Eventually the break of the day came, but with some hard work was being closed in on by a breakaway which included Keith Walsh. Meanwhile back in the main group Dungarvan CC had a great race, putting in hard efforts to make sure Keith Walsh could stay away, eventually finishing 8th.   Emma Walsh worked well completing 2 laps.

A great few days of racing and with only three weeks into the racing calendar things are looking good for Dungarvan CC.

Check out www.irishcycling for further details and photos.

SAFETY TIP OF THE WEEK

If you get tired, move to the rear.

Fatigue causes dangerous riding, so it's safer to go to the back of the group than to be in the middle of the action. Don't just swerve and slow, though! Tell those around you that you're dropping back so it's a safe move.

DUNGARVAN CYCLING CLUB RACING TEAM UPDATE

Last Sunday 7 Dungarvan Credit Union C.C. members travelled to Banteer Co Cork for the second race of the season. Maurice Hickey, Keith Walsh, Dzintars Klava, Keith Radley, Mark Power and Damian Travers lined up in the men’s handicap event and Emma Walsh competed in the ladies race.

The race was held over a very flat 9 mile circuit consisting of 5 laps.  From the off the race was lively, with Maurice Hickey being active in the first real attack only to see himself come down when caught in the main bunch, to his credit he got straight back on and was attacking soon after.

Numerous attacks were made but the bunch wasn’t letting anybody get too far ahead.  Dungarvan CC committed themselves well, with each team member attacking at different stages in the race but finding it difficult to pull away from the bunch.  Mark Power made a concerted effort on Lap 3 to put some breathing space between himself and the bunch, but it wasn’t to be.

On the last lap Damian and Keith Walsh got away in a break of about 10 but with nobody willing to work they were soon hauled back in by the bunch.

On the last lap with good work from Keith Radley and Dzintars, Damian tried to get away on two occasions but to no avail.  So in the end it came down to a bunch sprint but with no Dungarvan CC cyclists in the top six.

Emma Walsh also started with the Senior C’s and did well to stick with the main bunch for most of the race getting dropped off the back at the end of the race for what at stages was a very fast race.

All in all a good days cycling with all cyclists giving a good account of themselves.

SAFETY TIP OF THE WEEK

Don’t brake unless absolutely necessary.

If you must brake, do so lightly to scrub off a little speed. You can also slow down by sitting upright and catching more wind in your chest.

ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE

Can all members intending to cycle with the Dungarvan Credit Union float at this years St Patrick’s Day parade please meet on the Coolagh Road Abbeyside at 3pm on Monday 17th March. Please also be advised that due to the numerous stops and starts in a parade situation it may be easier for cyclist to wear runners rather than the standard cleats.

WEEKEND SPINS

Out cycling were Michael Moloney, Frank Browne, Pat O’Driscoll, Colin Organ, Vincent Feeny, Sean Dwyer, Richie Power, Keith Walsh, Dzintar’s Klava, Mark Power (DCC), Damian Travers, Emma Walsh, Keith Radley, Frank ORourke, Pádraig de Búrca, Liam Rossitor, Francis Barry, Benny Flynn, Mark Power (DMCC), Ray Dwyer and Michael Curran.

DUNGARVAN CYCLING CLUB RACING TEAM UPDATE

Last Sunday 6 Dungarvan Credit Union C.C. members travelled to Broadford, Co. Limerick for the second race of the season. Maurice Hickey, Keith Walsh,
Dzintars Klava, Keith Radley and Damian Travers lined up in the men’s handicap event and Emma Walsh competed in the ladies race. Enda Donnelly drove a support car for the team.

The hilly 108km course along with the breezy conditions made for a tough day on the bike, but the men quickly got down to business with Maurice Hickey putting in a lot of attacks early on. The two Keith’s rode strongly to make the break of the day from this group with Damian, Maurice and Dzintar’s keeping an eye on things back in the bunch. The break swept past some of the earlier starters and at the end of the third
lap of five, Keith Walsh put in a strong move up a hill that only two could follow, with Keith Radley smartly marking the others in the break behind. These three riders caught some more of the earlier starters to make a group of six chasing two men at the head of the race.

Damian and Maurice had the misfortune of getting caught behind a crash in the bunch that ruined their chances of challenging. Meanwhile Dzintar’s showed he's learning the tactics of cycle racing quickly and joined Tom Shanahan of Limerick and together they rode very hard to bridge a big gap up to Keith Walsh's group of six and these eight then raced for third or fourth place.

Two Dungarvan men in the top eleven was a strong performance and all five Dungarvan men rode well throughout the race - the Winter training is paying off.

In the ladies race Emma Walsh lined up for her first open race and left many more experienced ladies behind her. It's a big step to start and complete your first
open race and Emma took the step up in level in her stride. She can have confidence that she can now build on this experience.

Next race is in Banteer this Sunday, March 9th and hopefully we can build again on the good performances so far. If any members are interested in doing service
at a race, contact Enda Donnelly. It's a great way of watching a race develop at close quarters.

SAFETY TIP OF THE WEEK

Stay alert at all times.

Never assume that it's safe. Keep "reading" the dynamics of the group and always leave yourself an out by keeping on opening to one side that you can escape through if there's a crash or obstacle you have to avoid.
