On Wednesday last, August 22nd Enda Donnelly and Hugh Mulhearne secured victory in week 3 of our annual Ger Wyley Team TimeTrial. On a night suited to good times they completed the Whitechurch route in 36:15, a full 45 seconds inside their predicted time. In second place was the foursome Benny Flynn, Pádraig de Búrca, Richie Power and Davey Tobin who went round in 38:51 and secured a PB for several on the team. Dane Power, Frank Browne and Micheel Whelan completed the course in 44:47.
On Week 2, the winners were Damien Travers, Enda Donnelly (again!) and Michael Moloney as they raced around in 37:51. Very impressive cycling indeed!
Just a reminder to everyone that the final event in this series will be tonight, Wednesday August 29th. All cyclists who sign-on at Kilrush at 6:45 will be put on a team, so even if you haven’t been on a team in this competition in previous weeks, don’t let it stop you from participating! This is our last event of the season… so come along and enjoy the fun!
The Sean Kelly
All the talk during the past week has been on how wonderful the Sean Kelly tour of Waterford proved to be. It was wonderful to see how proud all the cyclists were of their achievements, and indeed there’s already lots of anticipation for next year. Well done to all involved. A special mention must to the staff in Waterford County Council, and in particular Richie Walsh and Johnny Brunnock. Take a bow there! They were very ably assisted in running the show by Rosarie Kealy and Karen Phelan in Waterford sports Partnership. Thank you ladies. And finally, a very big thank you to Sean, for helping to make this wonderful event a reality.
Weekend spins
Both days of the weekend were ablaze with sunshine, and those who were out on the bikes enjoyed good spins: on Saturday to Ballyduff and camphire; and on Sunday to Bunmahon, Kill, Carroll’s Cross and home via the N25; while some of the group decided on a more leisurely trip to Lismore. On the bikes were: Francis Barry, Eddie Moore, Damien Travers, Frank O’Rourke and Frank Browne, Colin Organ, Eamonn O’Docherty, Keith Radley, Mark Power and Mark Power, Pádraig de Búrca, David Cummins, Davey Tobin, Brian O’Mahony, and Jim. Well done to Brian who completed a 70k on Saturday, and came back for more on Sunday, having been only a short few weeks on the bike!

Sean Kelly Tour an Outstanding Success
More than 900 cyclists participated last Sunday August 19th in the inaugural Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford, commencing and finishing in Dungarvan. It must be said that it was the biggest and best event of its kind in the town, drawing participants from far and wide. These large numbers were added to by a huge turnout of Dungarvan Credit Union cyclists, and including many former members who dusted off the bike specifically for the event. There were three routes to choose from: 45km, 100km and 160km. The event was marked by fine weather, but with strong blustery winds, each participant needed that bit extra to complete their chosen course. We want to thank everyone for committing to this event, and congratulate you on successfully completing your chosen route.
Waterford County Council superbly coordinated the event in association with Waterford Sports Partnership. Our club and all other local clubs were involved in the planning for this hugely successful event, and it is testimony to what can be achieved in a short time. Over refreshments in the Sports Centre after the event, many were discussing plans for next year. Roll on!

COLIN ORGAN PLAYS ANOTHER WINNING TUNE IN O’MAHONY CYCLES AND NURSERY SUMMER SERIES
Colin Organ completed a hat-trick of hard-earned victories to claim the overall honours in this 2007 Summer Series sponsored by O’Mahony Cycles & Nursery. Helped along by a strong group, Colin saw off the challenge from other competitors in fine style. Time-keeping on the night indicated that the yellow-jersey group reached the Welcome Inn a full two minutes faster than the previous week, and this, given wet and windy conditions, was enough to ensure top spot for the popular Knockanore man, as the chasing group were kept at bay but merely by a small 30-second margin. The minor places on the night were taken by Benny Flynn, Emma Walsh, Richie Power and Michael Moloney. Prizes for the Summer series were presented later that evening in Minnies Bar, Abbeyside, and the Joe Fitzgerald memorial cup was presented by Mary Fitzgerald to Colin Organ. We are grateful once again to Siobhan and Tony for their continued generous sponsorship of this annual event. Final thanks also to Francis Barry for handicapping and time-keeping, and to Niamh o’Mahony for sign-on.

COLIN ORGAN PLAYS A WINNING TUNE IN O’MAHONY CYCLES AND NURSERY SUMMER SERIES
Colin Organ took his second victory to out sprint Benny Flynn, 2nd and Emma Walsh 3rd, last Wednesday in the 7th week of The Summer Series.Liam Rossiter and Richie Power were 4th and 5th respectively taking up the remaining extra points. The second and third groups failed to catch the earlier cyclists and this left the first groups to fight it out for the points.
With one week to go Colin now leads the series from Brett Lynam, Keith Walsh and Benny Flynn. However with the points system the club uses and depending on who finishes, it is still possible for any of the top seven places to win the overall. Thanks once again to our sponsors Tony and Siobhan from O’Mahony Cycles and Nursery, Abbeyside.
The presentation of the Joe Fitzgerald Memorial Cup will be by Mary Fitzgerald. This will take place after tonight’s race at Minnie’s Bar, Abbeyside at 9pm.

NATIONAL TIME TRIAL CHAMPIOSHIPS
The Dungarvan Credit Union Cycling Club Committee wishes to thank all those involved in the organisation of last Friday’s event. Full details appear in and adjacent story.
MARK RADLEY GOAL CHARITY SPIN
Club members Mark Radley and Keith Radley completed a charity spin last Saturday with friends, for GOAL. They started in Belgium and cycled across southern England arriving in Roslare on Friday evening 29th June. The final section of the journey to Dungarvan was on Saturday 30th June and a small group of cyclists from Dungarvan CC planned to meet them on the way, however Saturday’s bad weather caused them to turn back.
Mark and Keith were involved in our earlier club charity spin in May, and they should be applauded for further charity work for such a good cause.
NIAMH O’MAHONY CLAIMS THIRD OVERALL IN JUNIOR EVENT AND TONY CIRCUMNAVIGATES THE ISLAND
Niamh O’Mahony, daughter of Siobhan and Tony had great success in the recent Junior series held in Carrick. She claimed third overall in her first year as a competitive cyclist. The Club congratulates her.
Speaking of the O’Mahony family, congratulations also to Tony who last weekend completed a circumnavigation of Ireland, in a Kayak! Tony along with Derek Lyons and Brian Fahy were raising money for the Make-A-Wish foundation and completed the journey in five weeks. Well done to the three of you.
WEEK-END SPINS
Out cycling in the continuing poor weather over the weekend were Damien Travers, Frank Browne, Brett Lynam, Emma Walsh, Colin Organ, Eddie Moore, Vincent Feeny, Benny Flynn, Richie Power, Eddie Hickey, Anthony Dwyer, Pat O’Driscoll, Keith Walsh and Mark Power (DCC).
Despite the Summer recess in racing, spins continue each weekend on Saturday at John Foley’s, Kilrush and Sunday in The Square, both at 9.30am with Saturday’s spin heading toward Waterford as mentioned above. Beginners are always welcome on a Sunday and a member will be available to travel for whatever distance at whatever speed is suitable-so come along with bike, helmet and some food and water and give cycling a try.
MUNSTER CHALLENGE
Most outstanding monies raised as part of the Munster Challenge have been handed in to O’Mahony’s Cycles, Ger Wyley Sports or Rossiters Meats. Anyone with further funds please drop them in to the above mentioned. A final figure raised will be released soon.
SEAN KELLY TOUR
The Sean Kelly Tour of the Commeraghs takes place this August with three differing levels from beginners to experienced cyclists. Details can be found at www.theseankellytour.com .
NICHOLAS ROCHE CLAIMS NATIONAL TIME TRIAL TITLE
Nicholas Roche (Son of former Tour de France winner-Stephen Roche) Racing for Credit Agricole took First place in the Elite Mens Time Trial held last Friday in Dungarvan. He completed the tough 36km course in 44minutes 7.29 seconds, just 12 seconds ahead of David McCann, 2nd, and David O’Loughlin a further 21 seconds back in 3rd. The French based cyclist will now be entitiled to wear the Irish Champions Jersey in Time Trials for the next 12 months.
The Ladies event was even closer with Louise Moriarty(Global Racing) taking 1st place from Jenny Fay by just 5 seconds. Heather Wilson was a further 2 seconds back in 3rd. Under 23 Champion was Paul Brady, Veterans winner was Ivan Robinson(Ards CC), 1st Junior was Sean Downey(Banbridge CC) and the Tandem event was taken by the team of Crother and McMinn (Ards CC).
Well done also to local cyclists Rory Wyley and Hugh Mulhearne (Both Dan Morrissey) who finished 9th and 13th respectively in the Elite Mens Category.
This is the first time Dungarvan Credit Union Cycling Club had hosted a national title and the event went well with the weather holding out and keeping the roads dry. Cyclists travelled from The Burgery up The Pike Hill, through Lemybrien and on to Kilmacthomas where they turned under the main road. Ladies and Juniors finished at Lemybrien whilst the rest of the competitors finished on the slip-road at The Pike. A number of competitors commented on the hard but fair course, made all the more difficult by the Senior Riders having to climb The Pike Hill twice.
Preparations had been going on for a number of weeks with over 50 locals involved in the organisation of Stewarding, Time Keeping and Logistics. Thanks must go out to all those involved including local cyclists and runners, with a special mention for West Waterford Athletic Club who provided equipment and “bodies”. There were also a large number of generous people not from sporting clubs whom Ger “encouraged” into service and we thank you all.
Full results can be found on the Club web site: www.dungarvancyclingclub.org along with further photographs. One final note, a local cyclist loaned a wheel to a competitor on Friday night and did not collect their wheel afterwards. The missing wheel can be collected at O’Mahonys Nursery and Cycle.
