CLUB NOTES by SEAN DWYER:

21 December 2009

SUCCESSFUL WLR/LIONS CLUB HAMPER APPEAL CYCLE

Despite freezing conditions on Sunday last there was a good turnout for the annual fund raising spin and a generous collection. On a morning for cautious cycling a group went to Kilmeaden and back on the main road with another group going to Cappagh.

WEEKEND SPINS

Saturday saw riders heading west on the main road. One group went to Castlemartyr and turned while another went over to Clashmore and Cappoquin.

Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s, Kilrush on Saturday and the Square on Sunday; both at 9.30am.

CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR/WEEKEND SPINS

Anyone looking for a group spin on the days between Christmas and New Years is asked to meet at John Foley’s, Kilrush at 9.30am. Finally, anyone not suffering from the excesses of New Years Eve should also gather at John Foley’s, Kilrush on Friday the 1st at 9.30am for a New Years Day spin.

CYCLING QUOTE
“When the spirits are low, when the day appears dark, when work becomes monotonous, when hope hardly seems worth having, just mount a bicycle and go out for a spin down the road, without thought on anything but the ride you are taking.” -  Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

NEXT COMMITTEE MEETING

The first committee meeting of 2010 will take place on Monday January 4th at 8pm in Minnie's Bar, Abbeyside.

SEASONS GREETINGS AND THANK YOU

WLR/LIONS CLUB HAMPER APPEAL CYCLE ON SUNDAY THE 20th OF DECEMBER.

The WLR/Lions Club Hamper Appeal Cycle is on Sunday the 20th of December. This has become an Annual event for the Club and is a very worthy cause. The format is the same as previous years with a gathering in the Square at 9.20 for a photo. The hat will be passed around for donations. This will be followed by a spin with the route decided on the morning. Any members wanting a shorter spin can join in and turn when they wish. Santa hats over helmets or Christmas outfits are encouraged!

WEEKEND SPINS

There were large numbers of club members on the road at the weekend taking advantage of a decent spell of weather. With an easterly wind blowing, the Coast Road was the preferred route out of town.
On Saturday a large group went to Bonmahon, Kill, Kilmeaden and home on the N25 and although the weather Gods may have been on our side the puncture Gods weren't (well not Damian's anyway).
There was a big crowd in the Square on Sunday and a number of groups headed down the Coast Road again with riders taking the various options to turn for home and a large number covering Bonmahon, Kill, Kilmeaden, Portlaw and home. Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s, Kilrush on Saturday and the Square on Sunday; both at 9.30am.

CYCLING QUOTE

It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down themThus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle. - Ernest Hemingway

WEEKEND SPINS

There was mixed weather for club cyclists at the weekend. On Saturday the group had a rather wet trip around the Tallow-Youghal bridge circuit. Sunday saw blue skies and the reappearance of the sun, which made for a couple of enjoyable spins. One group took on Tallow-Youghal bridge again while another went to Lismore and back.  Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s, Kilrush on Saturday and the Square on Sunday; both at 9.30am.

22 November

WEEKEND SPINS

In spite of the blustery and wet conditions at the weekend there were still some brave souls out on the bikes.

On Sunday a good sized group battled the wind to Castlemartyr before turning while another group went to Lismore and back where Padraig got a chance to demonstrate his puncture repair skills. Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s, Kilrush on Saturday and the Square on Sunday; both at 9.30am.

16 November 2009

WEEKEND SPINS

While your scribe was bravely battling a case of man-flu at the weekend club members were on the roads battling the elements (and dogs).

On Saturday a group headed for Ballyduff and Tallow. Some riders went on to Camphire and Tourin where a couple of local dogs objected to their presence. Rumours that a certain vet, middle name “Hardship”, bit the dogs back are unconfirmed.

Sunday saw a large group go to Youghal, Tallow and home.

Padraig's group took the Cappoquin road, with some riders turning at Cappagh, others going on to Affane and more going to Lismore. This spin is proving to be very successful, as evidenced by the fact that we've had 18 new faces over the past 6 weeks.

Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s, Kilrush on Saturday and the Square on Sunday; both at 9.30am.

9 November 2009

WEEKEND SPINS

Once again we had big numbers on the roads at the weekend and it's great to see lots of new faces turning up for the spins. Saturday's weather was character building but we had two groups on the road. One group went around the Millstreet circuit and another went to Ballyduff, Tallow, Youghal and home.

Bright sunshine on Sunday saw a large crowd assembled in the Square. One group headed to Youghal and on to Tallow, and a second group went to Affane with some riders going on to Lismore.

COMMITTEE MEETING

The first meeting of the new committee took place in Minnie's bar on 2nd November and was very well attended. Among the topics discussed were the competition dates for the new season and the success of the recent beginners' spins.

REMINDER OF THE CLUB'S PUNCTURE POLICY

Given that it seems to be the season for it and some riders are having to take out their little pumps:

In the event of a cyclist puncturing on a group spin the club policy is for the group to ride on for approximately five minutes before turning in order and going back for the rider. Another cyclist may stay back and assist the punctured cyclist.

MOUNTAIN BIKING IN BALLYHOURA

If anybody would be interested in a day's mountain biking at the Ballyhoura trails over the Christmas break contact Benny Flynn.

WEEKEND SPINS

Despite the appalling weather over the last week the weather Gods were good to us at the weekend, giving us a couple of dry mornings for cycling, and were rewarded with large numbers out on both days.

On Saturday a big group headed for Lismore, Ballyduff and Tallow; with some riders going back via Camphire, and others going on to Youghal and home.

Sunday was quite windy but we still had a large number of cyclists assembled in the Square. One group went to Old Parish, Ardmore, Clashmore, Villierstown and Cappoquin. The second group went to Affane, with some riders going on to Lismore. Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s, Kilrush on Saturday and the Square on Sunday; both at 9.30am.

25 October 2009

WEEKEND SPINS

Saturday was a windy morning but we still had some hardy cyclists on the road with a group heading to Cappoquin, Villierstown and Clashmore before coming back via the mountain road and over to Ring.

Sunday's spin saw one group going to Lismore, Ballyduff, Tallow, Camphire and home through Cappoquin; and another group going to Lismore and back.

With it being a bank holiday we also had a group out on Monday.

Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s, Kilrush on Saturday and the Square on Sunday; both at 9.30am.

SEAN KELLY TOUR REVIEW

Cycling Weekly magazine carried a 4 page account of the Sean Kelly Tour in this week's issue. There was a very positive review of the day accompanied by some great pictures. It's nice to see the tour getting such good international exposure.

CYCLING QUOTE

There's no such thing as a tail wind. There's head winds and “going well”.

18 October 2009

WEEKEND SPINS

We had large numbers of cyclists on the roads again this weekend.

Saturday's spin brought the group down the main road to Carroll's Cross and over to Portlaw and Carrick via Scrouty before heading back to Dungarvan.

Sunday saw two groups leave the Square, one going to Lismore and back, and the other going on to Tallow and Youghal bridge, coming back on the main road.

It was an eventful spin, unfortunately both Colin and Vinny hit the deck on the way home. Luckily there were no major injuries, although Colin now has a valid excuse to buy some new kit. We hope to see them back on the bike soon and would like to thank the drivers who stopped to offer their help and make sure everyone was ok. Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s Kilrush on Saturday and the Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am.

NEXT COMMITTEE MEETING

The first meeting of the new committee will take place at 8pm on Monday the 2nd of November at
Minnie’s Bar, Abbeyside

DCC CATERING FOR ALL

A short meeting will be held on Monday October 19th at 8pm in Minnie's to plan and coordinate the proposed Option 3 spin. Any club members interested please attend, and anyone new to the sport of cycling is also welcome to attend. Option 3 is our Sunday morning spin at a slower pace. Already we have seen that there is a core group of cyclists interested in this option. The pace of this group will be determined by the ability of its consistent members. Newcomers will be catered for, given advice, given a training plan and brought along slowly. Keep an eye on these club notes for further details. As of now, this Option 3 spin leaves the Square on Sundays 5 minutes (9.35am) after the regular spin. Why not come along? Why not tell a friend?

WEEKEND SPINS

A lot of cyclists took advantage of the fine October weather to get out this weekend.

Saturday's spin brought the group down the coast road to Bunmahon and across to Portlaw and Carrick on Suir. Sunday had three groups leave the Square taking on different routes.

Weekend spins will continue to meet at John Foley’s Kilrush on Saturday and the Square on Sunday, both at 9.30am.

NEXT COMMITTEE MEETING

The first committee meeting of the new committee will take place at 8pm on Monday the 2nd of November at Minnie’s Bar, Abbeyside.
