Taking part from Dungarvan Cycling club were Sean “Showery” Dwyer, Maurice Fennell and Colin Organ. The Rebel Tour was the last of the very successful An Post series and started and finished in Mallow. Sign on and registration was in the very impressive Mallow GAA grounds. Unlike the other tours of the summer there was a van from A Cork Bike shop displaying its products, very impressive it was too.
The start was delayed about a half an hour due to the fog and it was pretty cold hanging around, although Showery did enjoy listening to Marillion and the Mamma Mia soundtrack while we waited! 9.30 we rolled out into a very foggy morning. This soon burned off and the day was glorious unlike every other tour this year.
Poor timing on a nature break meant we had to work hard to get back to the group. Unfortunately we were working hard going into Millstreet. At Millstreet we took a sharp left turn and what was waiting for us was almost enough to make me abandon the bike and get a bus home!! Meshera is a first category climb and seems to go on forever.
After getting over the climb we rolled along nicely until the food stop in Macroom. The food stop was very good with plenty of everything especially fruitcake. We sat out in the sun and enjoyed the food and the atmosphere.
We met up with Paul Gammell here who was fresh from Munster Hill Climb gold medal for the second year in a row. Well done Paul.
We rolled out from the food stop with a big group. There was about 30 to 40 riders in this group and it was being driven on by the “Blarney Boys”.
It was a very fast pace all the way back to the finish and the group had reduced to maybe 15, again it was the Blarney train doing most of the damage.
We got back to Mallow GAA grounds and collected our certs and Showery sang along with Marillion again.
It was a great day in great weather. The tour was well organised and very well marshalled.
SEAN KELLY TOUR of WATERFORD
Sunday August 30th the Sean Kelly tour took place leaving and finishing in Dungarvan. The club was represented in all 3 distances. Well done to all. An amazing 2700 people took part.
Check out the official website here for full photo coverage. Some photos have been added to our gallery. Anyone with photos that we can include in the gallery please email Emma. IRELANDS FIRST CYCLING CLUB - FEATURED ARTIFACT
Waterford County Museum
This week is heritage week and the featured artifact on display in the Waterford County Musuem is the 'Four Miles Bicycle Race' Challenge Cup. The cup was won by famous photographer, Richard Edward Brennan in 1869. Did you know that Dungarvan had the first cycling club in Ireland? Richard E. Brennan played a major part in starting up of the club and even helped start the craze of bicycle touring - another first for Dungarvan!
If in Dungarvan call into the Museum and have a look at the cup.
Tour of Ireland - LANCE COMES TO TOWN
Large crowds on the Vee
Saturday morning (22nd August) saw some members travel to the Vee to watch the Tour of Ireland pass through on route to Killarney. The Vee was packed with spectators. The weather was fantastic, the countryside looking its best. Stage two was won by Mark Cavendish.
A winning Prize night
On Saturday night (15th August) following a very successful 110mile Charity Cycle, we had our first 'prize night'. A large crowd enjoyed a great night, thanks to Minnies for providing plenty of food. Amongst those in attendance was Mrs Fitzgerald who presented the summer series Cup to Benny Flynn. Thanks to all our sponsors who make these competitions possible: Laim Rossiter Meats, Finbar Kelly Taxi Service, Ger Wyley Sports and O'Mahony Cycles.
Thanks to all for participating in this years competitions, we had record numbers attending in all. It has been a great season for the club both locally and around the country in leisure and racing events - lets hope we can build on this years success and look forward to bigger and better things in 2010!!!!

Successful Charity Cycle in aid of the Solas Centre
Saturday last (August 15th) a group of 27 cyclists took part in a gruelling 115-mile charity cycle around the perimeter of Waterford County – organised by Dungarvan Cycling Club – in aid of the Solas Centre fund. Half-an-hour before the scheduled start time of 8am heavy rain fell, resulting in poor visibility, but just as the riders prepared to set off, the sun broke through right on cue. With everyone signed-on and the support car packed with spare wheels, drinks, bananas and bars, we made our way down along the scenic coast road. The route, starting and finishing in Dungarvan, took in Tramore, Waterford, Carrick-on-Suir, Clonmel, the Vee, and Lismore. After a fine journey down the Copper Coast and on in through the city, where collectors from the Solas Centre waved the cyclists on, we were just leaving Waterford when the clouds started to darken and the weather changed. It duly rained heavily all the way to Clonmel, where a much-needed food stop was held at the Park Hotel. Leaving the South Tipperary capital feeling refreshed, the sun resurfaced and we took the road to Ardfinnan en route to the Cat 1 climb of the Vee – a feature of Stage 2 in next week’s Tour of Ireland, in which seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong will compete. The Vee proved no bother to the cyclists as they all powered up the slopes, forming several clusters of various climbing abilities. (A “killer bee” took a shine to Mark Power’s head, but its sting still couldn’t take him down!) Gathering again at the top of the Vee, refuelling and filling their water bottles, the group enjoyed a fast descent into Lismore and, with a tailwind to Dungarvan, a nice steady pace was maintained back home. Thanks to Liam Rossiter Meats for supplying the bananas, GSK for the Lucozade, and Dungarvan CC for organising the food stop; also to Emma for driving the support car. Well done to all those who took part and gave generously to a very worthy cause, and to all others who could not participate but donated on the day. With some cards to be returned the final figure raised has still to be tallied.

Kelly Pharmacy GP
Damian wins in style
A strong Dungarvan team took to the start line in Colligan for their home race - the Kelly Pharmacy GP. Dzintars Klava, Damian Travers and Maurice Hickey were feeling good after three hard days of racing last weekend in Kanturk and they were joined by Ray Dwyer, Brian Hallisey, Enda Donnelly and race sponsor Joe Kelly. Damian and Dzintars were instrumental in forming a break group as the race passed Beary's cross on the first lap of the Millstreet circuit. This break worked well together to build a lead of 2 minutes, 15 seconds on the main bunch by the time the race finished the first of 2 laps. At this point, as the hammer went down in the bunch up Colligan hill, Ray Dwyer rode strongly to join a powerful chasing group. Damian, Dzintars and their companions in the break stayed away and it was down to six riders to fight for the win as they rounded the Master McGrath. Dzintars selflessly lead out Damian and the other riders, but just coming up to the finish there was a clash of handlebars and Dzintars hit the ground. Damian didn't let himself be put off in the panic and powered up the finish to beat Eoin Ryan of Limerick on the line and take a tremendous victory on a tough course. This was a well deserved win for Damian as he has ridden strongly since the season started and it was only a matter of time before a big result would come. The happiness of all the supporters in Colligan showed what a popular winner he was. Dzintars picked himself and his bike up and and ran the remainder of the hill and crossed the line in 6th. This placing is enough for Dzintars to move up a grade and he will now be racing with the elite of Irish cycling. Dzintars is the first club member in a number of years to reach this level. This has been a goal of Dzintars this season and again his perserverance and hard work has paid off. All going well Dzintars could be joined by one or two more before too long if the good results continue for the club. Ray Dwyer finished strongly in the next group, followed by Joe, Brian, Maurice and Enda in the main bunch. Brian Hallisey rode very well to finish strongly in the main bunch on a day when many others were left behind. Brian is getting the hang of positioning and tactics and will go from strength to strength after this performance. In the S1/S2 race Brian Kenneally took the win over local man Rory Wyley in a very aggressive days racing. There were great numbers and some future stars in the underage races. All the day’s racing went off smoothly, thanks in no small part to race organisers Ger Wyley and Justin Coonan and the many club members who assisted with marshalling and sign on etc. Thanks also to the Civil Defence and local gardai who ensured a safe days racing for all. Finally, a big thank you to Joe Kelly of Kelly Pharmacy who sponsored the race again this year. Joe rode the race, finished well in the main bunch and had enough time to get home, get changed and come back to present the prizes – a dream sponsor.

Bill Hyland Memorial Race, Clonmel - Return of the Ray The club had four members travel to Clonmel on Sunday (26th April) for the Bill Hyland Memorial. There was the ever young Ray Dwyer, Enda Donnelly, Dzintars Klava and Damian Travers, it was great to see such a strong showing for the racing side of the club. The circuit was a tough 9 mile x 5 laps, which took in 2 very sharp hills, one at the start/finish and the other up past Marlfield house, there was also a strong headwind to contend with out on the main Cahir road. The race started half way up a hill so this kept the pace respectable for a while. Ray on his first outing this year didn't have lady luck shining on him as he got caught behind no less than 3 crashes which put paid to his involvemnt at the front end but he continued and completed his first Open Race in a few years.Enda was also back to racing for the first time this year, after struggling for long periods with the "black lung" (as he likes to call it) was glad to get his first race under his belt. The race mainly stayed together for the first 2 laps when on the third lap a group of 3 drifted off the front, nobody was willing to chase them down as it didn't contain any of the 'big names'.Dzintars got away in a break then and stayed away for a lap before being brought back, but there were still three up the road. Enda kept himself safe at the business end of the race, staying tucked in the bunch and out of trouble.Damian tried to cover breaks whilst Dzintars was up the road. On the final lap Damian got away with just over half a lap remaining and stayed away till the last corner at the bottom of the last hill when as usual his legs imploded upon themselves with a bang that was probably heard in Dungarvan and was caught by the leading riders of the bunch.Dzintars, Enda and Damian finished in the first bunch with Ray finishing just behind them. All the 'newcomers' enjoyed themselves on a tough and challenging circuit and are raring for more in our local race, 'The Joe Kelly Grand Prix' in 2 weeks time. Carrick Cabs Cup - Dzintars Delight
It was a glorious day for racing, with record numbers signing on, there was a tailwind out the road with the headwind on the return leg of the main Carrick - Clonmel road. The race started with defending champion Martin O’Loughlin (DMCC) attacking straight from the gun and lining the race out from the start as everybody chased not letting him get away. There was a break of about 6 away for the first lap which was brought back by the start of lap 2, Maurice tried to escape the bunch with 2 other riders but again the bunch weren’t letting anybody get too far away with Martin O’Loughlin and DMCC determined to chase everything down. The decisive break came at the end of lap 2 with Martin again attacking at the bottom of Sir Johns and a group of 7 formed including Dzintars and local man Pat Kenneally. This break stayed away but was being chased down for the final lap when Damian and Laurent Damoulin jumped the bunch and pulled the break back to a few seconds, unfortunately Damians’ arch nemesis (a hill) caught him at the end where he slowed down and got swallowed by the bunch. There was a final dash up the hill by the lead group where Dzintars got caught at the front but dug in deep well to finish an excellent 3rd (B licence on the way if this keeps up). Keith rode stong in his first race of the season fnishing just outside the prizes in 11th place.
New comers Brian Hallissey and David Power found the initial pace tough going but stuck with it and finished the gruelling 100k course shortly after the main bunch. They should be both very happy with themselves. It’s great to see so many line up for the club and give racing a try. The new club gear has been receiving plenty of compliments from various other cycling clubs!
BANTEER BANTER Well done to Damian, Maurice, Emma and Brian who competed in Banteer last Sunday (15th March). Banteer is a flat circuit, which made for a very fast pace. Damian was very active in the race but was unlucky to not make the decisive break. Maurice Hickey felt good and finished in the bunch. Emma was happy enough with how she got on considering her knee has been given her some bother over the last few weeks completing 4 out of the 5 laps. Congratulations to Brian who completed the course, finishing in a small group shorty after the main bunch.
